The major producer of animation keeps is rank for an entire century due to its unique advance and quality of production. Snow White, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Cinderella, The Jungle book, The Aristocats are some Disney masterpieces that didn't aged and kept wonderful memories though generations. The first half of the XXth century was the golden age of the cartoons full of gags with the Looney Toons, Tex Avery, and from older times Betty Boop, or Felix the cat.

Since the 90's, a lot of satirical cartoons about the american society emerged. At this point, animated series was more and more, another time, opened to the adult public and keep really active. The famous Simpsons by Matt Groening, Family Guy by Steph McFarlane or South Park by Parker and Stone, are some of the most popular at this period. Some other ones highlights different subjects such as Hollywood star troubles with Bojack horseman, prospective about a futuristic world in Futurama, parallel universes and crazy science with Rick and Morty etc.
Some famous shows are known to be enjoyed by the children and by a double point of view for an adult side with Adventure Time, Gumball, Sponge Bob for example. It is an interesting fact we can see with animated series from the 30's to the 60's too.

We can find a lot of links with the comic creations, the same kind of connexion we can see with bande dessinées in Europe and mangas in Japan. The "hero" image, the characteristics of "good and evil" scheme as at some point see a lot of evolutions with alternative expression seen in Shrek, The indestructible, Megamind. Then, doubtful, anti-hero image or caricature portrait are often described for main characters.
Some studios keep a very recognizable style, graphic, flash with thick lines, in Cartoon Network with Powerpuff girls, Dexter's laboratory, Johnny Bravo or smooth and blurry style with the Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys or Hey Arnold! for Nickelodeon as 90's exemples.

The American animation is the world most known, from all of the classic European tales illustrated with Disney, to the innovative and leading position of the 3D animation at the end of the XXth century.
Always in advance and iconic for so many people in the world, the us animation have proved that it can still be creative, and relate new stories with new graphic technics, new subjects that still inspire everybody.
