Wailord

Description
The king of the seas, now flying in Aether, Wailord, the best water type pokemon (non-arguable)

Base sprite was provided by Pokemondb.

Overview

Wailord is a heavier melee character whose strongest moves have HEAVY cooldowns. Mixing up moves and timing out moves in advance is a must due to ending lag on attacks, plus keeping track of where you are on stage to prevent Self Destructions. Your hitbox is larger than the average fighter but if you can throw your weight around you can keep them at bay.

Movement Overview

There are two categories of moves for Wailord's kit: Poke' Moves and Normal Moves.
Poke' moves are listed on the player's HUD to show when they are ready to use. They become grayed out/darker when on cooldown. When a Poke' Move is on cooldown, there is no replacement, so plan carefully or you may be stuck like a beached whale.

The Poke' Moves are currently:

Up Strong | Water Spout: Your only 'ranged' move, water spout is a two hit up strong that launches opponents into the air. This move has a good amount of ending lag on either a hit or a miss as well as a modest cooldown so make sure you're using it carefully!

Side Special | Slam: Wailord launches himself up through the air before slamming down near an opponent. Note that while he does move a bit fast, he can be interrupted during the entire move. Be careful with slam, as after a tiny amount of control in the air, the downward plunge is a commitment, and aiming it incorrectly will launch you off of the stage. Slightly long cooldown but not a huge issue.

Down Special | Rest: Wailord falls asleep for a significant amount of time and recovers a modest amount of health. (Note this is nowhere near the full heal Rest gives in actual pokemon games). The healing is spread out over four cycles, and you are interruptable during the entire time this move is in effect. Cooldown slightly longer than RoA takes to load on my PC.
Important: you are committed to using Rest, and the only way out is dying or being hit by an opponent. You need to be very careful as to when you use this move. See Tips and Tricks for more info.

Down Air | Heavy Slam: The second strongest move in Wailord's kit, Heavy Slam sends Wailord on a fast downward plunge. He's so heavy that he falls through platforms so be careful! You do have super armor during this move, but will be stuck on the ground a bit longer than normal giving your opponents time to recover. Modest cooldown, only a couple of seconds.

Tips and Tricks

-Your fast falls are pretty fast, make sure you're not fastfalling into a slower move if you're near a ledge!

-Your neutral special does almost no damage to opponents but gets them away from your tail and towards your head where more of your attacks will hit. At low percents the opponent wont be launched in front of you meaning they are in a great position to hit you as they are towards the center of your body.

-A good amount of your normal attacks only damage around your head/mouth. You are going to need to align yourself to your opponent to properly hit.

-Due to the slower nature of Wailord's attacks, using different moves is recommended. Even multiple jabs in a row may not properly chain due to speed and knockback.

-The first half of Slam does not have a hitbox, but you can still get hit, take that as you will. The second half of Slam gives Wailord Super Armor.

-Hitting Slam on an opponent will continue your downward momentum. This means if your opponent was on a platform, you will fall through. The ending little slide of Slam when Wailord is on the ground will still hit opponents. If you can't drop on them try to get as close as possible!

-Using rest will cause you to fall slower if you're up in the air. You are still locked into the move but you can try to use this to stall. Note you cannot use this after using Up Special, as the next tip describes.

-Your up special has two outcomes at the end of the move depending on if you have "Heavy Slam" ready. If it is ready, Wailord will immediately go into heavy slam. This is both a blessing and a curse. If you do not have it ready, he will go into pratfall. Note Heavy Slam must be ready when you START the up special move or it will not count.

-When using rest the healing won't start until the second cycle, your enemies have a LOT of time to know you're using the move. Timing is everything to get the most out of this move. The cooldown on this move is very long on purpose. Cooldown will NOT be reset if you are interrupted.

-The directional force of Heavy Slam is STRAIGHT DOWN. At higher percents this may be a spike on ledges but the true spike will need some self-sacrifice :)

-Heavy Slam also has a sweet spot near the middle (the part of Wailord's belly under his eye-ish). This sweet spot does a little more damage with more launch power than the rest of his belly.

-Heavy Slam will keep dropping Wailord until he hits the ground, meaning you can strike multiple opponents if they are aligned for some reason. It does mean he will drop through platforms when using this move, however.

-There's an extremely small window when you hit an opponent with Heavy Slam where jumping will negate the ending lag of the move, but not the cooldown. Its small enough that you should not expect to hit it every time, but it may appear when you need it the most.

-The fastest move Wailord has is his neutral air, when he returns to his pokeball as water spins around it.
