"You can't keep a good thing down"

The Thunderbolt was, for some time, the mainline fighter of the republic navy, before eventually being phased out by newer and more modern ships. With so many produced, scrapping them took time, and many were left to just waste away in scrapyards, leaving only husks of what were once very capable ships.

It would be in one of these scrapyards where an engineer found what was left of a Thunderbolt-B, and took it upon himself to repair and modify it to modern standards. This would eventually lead to the Mark 3 variant, which ended up catching the eye of some of the higher-ups in the navy. The project was given more funding, and soon the Mark 3 was ready for combat, and a production of the Thunderbolts restarted.

The Mark 3 variant serves as a fighter-bomber, carrying quite the varied weapons package. It contains 3 autocannons, 4 gatling guns, 6 rocket launchers and 2 torpedoes. Combine this with a fairly long range, relatively small profile, decent maneuverability, and it's no surprise that the Thunderbolt quickly became a favorite in the navy once again.
