Description
Similar to what the Realistic Plant Cycles mod does, this mod extends this "realism logic" to animal husbandry.
Again, with some raw data and a bunch of maths, I've converted the lifespans, development ages(Juvenile=Wean Age, Adult=Sexual Maturity Age), litter sizes, and most importantly, gestation periods to reflect real life.

This will significantly change the strategy you use if you choose to farm and breed animals in your colony.

The market value of animals has also been adjusted to reflect the changes respective to gestation periods. Meaning, there is a direct correlation between the time it takes to breed/raise animals and their market values. Because butcher yields scale based on the animals age, (they reach 100% at Adult stage,) the value of their meat has been adjusted based on the time it takes for them to reach full maturity.

It all started when I decided I wanted to revert the values back to how they were pre-1.3. I started looking into the real-life data and realized I should just go all-in. So, I took all that data and converted it from Earth's 365-day cycle to RimWorld's 60-day cycle.

The results will have major impacts on the Ranching Playstyle, (or even when raising pets or attack animals.) Rather than reproducing every 5-10 days, as it is in Vanilla, many animals may take several quadrums to over a year. Likewise, animals that typically reach sexual maturity(adult stage) in under a year, may take several years.

This not only affects their ability to reproduce, but also, the amount of animal products they produce or the amount of meat/leather given when butchered before maturity. However, litter sizes tend to be capped at two in Vanilla. Now they can be much larger depending on the species.

The majority of the data I used comes from this website [genomics.senescence.info].

In general, I'm only patching "real" animals. However, some animals, either through the lore(description) or through analogous animals have been patched with their closest relative. Examples are extinct Woolly Mammoths use the values from the Asian Elephants. Alphabeavers use regular beaver values. Muffalo->buffalo, etc.

TLDR:
  • Ranching and raising animals will be much more rewarding economically but it will require an equally large investment of time and resources.
  • Animal growth and reproduction rates are scaled to be closer to real life values.
  • Meat Market Values are changed to reflect the investment of raising an animal from birth to adulthood.
  • Base animal Market Values are adjusted to reflect Gestation Time plus Combat Power*.
*If animal is trainable to attack.

Note:
At least for now, I am not touching any egg-laying animals.

Is being able to milk most mammals under consideration in this mod?
I would like to milk sheep and still get their wool and meat which is very much something that people do in real life. A dairy sheep makes about a pint of milk per milking, and can be milked up to three times a day.

Partially updated for 1.5 (only vanilla)

Note: After a lot of discussion here and on Discord I did refactor all the life expectancy values. I did some more research and found some other sources and have made changes to reflect, what I believe, to be better accuracy.

I have only changed the vanilla animals so far. I will get to the modded ones soon.

Are there any general mods that allow the increasing of lifespans for animals? Your mod is the first I've ever found making lifespans longer

Hmm, I will do some testing. It really shouldn't.

But it's likely that the animal "got younger" when adding this mod because it changes the calculation of life stages. So, w/out the mod it is considered an adult. But w/ this mod, it is still a juvenile and you just need to wait longer for it to grow up again.

I will still take a look to make sure there isn't any direct conflicts though.

with this mod i can´t use giddy up anymore. when i try to mount a grown up horse it say "animal isn´t fully grown" could this be a issue because i added the mod mid game? i disabled the mod for now and i can ride my horses again.
