“恩格斯”号为“先行者”级战列巡洋舰首舰，依托原德三舰体设计，搭载东方系武器装备。其二号舰为“卡尔·李卜克内西”号，换装406mm联装炮塔。

冷战事态的发展使得该舰有了奇特的姊妹舰。在该级舰2号舰即将完成时，其总师受西方情报工作影响叛逃西德，并在西德开发出了“奥丁”级战列巡洋舰。“奥丁”级使用德式武器装备，二号舰“齐格飞”号则搭载1943年试验型406mm联装舰炮。

Battlecruiser Engels was the lead ship of "Pioneer" Class Battlecruiser. She was based on KMS hull design combined with weapon systems from Eastern Bloc. The 2nd ship of the class took the namesake of "Karl Liebknecht" carrying 3 double 406mm turrets.

Events during the Cold War took an unexpected turn, several weird sister ships emerged to this class of battlecruiser. At the end of the construction of "Karl Liebknecht". The chief designer defected to west Germany under the influence of western espionage. The west Germany then put forward "Odin" Class Battlecruiser. The 2nd ship of "Odin" Class was named as "Siegfried" carrying 3 experimental 406mm double turret dates back to 1943.
