SS Camel 1870

SS Camel was an iron screw steamship built by Harland and Wolff for themselves. Launched September 7th 1870, and delivered 10 days later, she was a cargo ship purely designed to transport large engine parts (modified in 1877 to also carry iron) to the shipyard. She (likely) had a speed of 8 or 9 knots. At 269 gross register tons, she was a tiny little steamer. Not much is known, but she likely supplied the large engine parts to build some White Star Liners, such as the RMS Britannic of 1874 and USMS Gaelic of 1873. Once machinery was built to transport the engines and iron, she was deemed completely useless. She was sold to Gustav Wolff in partnership with two others in 1883, sold to Carlisle & Co.Mgrs. In 1890, she was sold again to Matthews & Luff Company for only two years. Sold to SSCamel Co. Limited, then chartered briefly in 1907. Sold to Italy, and renamed to SS Elena until 1915 when she was renamed to SS Cannebiére, serving for the Louis Sicard & Cie of France, until being broken up in 1924 at an impressive 54 years old.
