The Zone - v2.0

Description
Map Pitch :
Welcome to the Zone, human. Careful, Space-time is unstable in this place, causing the course to transform whenever you take a ramp. Because of this, your ability to reset your ball has been disabled. ...For your own safety, of course. Have fun!

Features :
  • 18 holes with a easy/medium difficulty level.
  • Lots of opportunities to score easily under par, but few hole in one oppotunities.
  • Holes form in front of your eyes, and shift into a new form whenever you take a small ramp. To prevent softlocking yourself with this, I had to disable resets.
  • Maps is pretty easy. This avoids making it frustrating despite the "no reset" limitation.
  • Permanent Neon filter. the color changes whenever a transformation occurs.
  • Music is "Early Hours" from synthwave group New Arcades
  • Sounds of "hole shifts" edited by me, using SFX from a library I purchased as basis.
  • The robot voice at beginning and end is also me. Sorry for the accent!

My Comments :

Yes, I am alive. But since I decided to resume my work on my comic book project, I don't have much time for video games these days. And when I do, I just want to take a break from creating and therefore my steam workshop has been slowing to a crawl. Sorry about that, but recent events have led me to rethink my priorities. And creating for games, even though iI really like it, isn't something I consider "I must absolutely try to do before I die". Whereas that comic is.

But anyways, enough with the dark stuff : this is my second attempt to tackle the concept of "holes that transform in front of your eyes". I tried that first with "castle triggerstein" but that map made me realize I needed big open spaces so the transformations could be really seen. So I shifted for a big empty space with retro neon aesthetics, and here is the result.

I sadly had to conclude that, even though this concept sounds awesome on paper, it's really not that great in practice.
Triggers in this game are janky and the lanes "coming in to form the hole" sometimes don't align perfectly even though the numbers said they should. Plus, this forced me to disable manual ball reset to prevent the players from soft-locking themselves. I even had to stop development on this map for 2 months because a (now solved) bug simply made it unplayable.

Not my best map to my eyes, but it is functional and offers a unique gimmick. So despite my little gripes with it, it was worth it to make this experiment.
...But unless you end up loving this a lot more than I am expecting, I don't think I'll ever do a map around this concept of "holes that form in front of you" anymore. It's cursed. XD

As usual, I tested the map a lot, but the possibility of problems remaining still exists. Sadly, some just come from the game engine having janky triggers, and I can't do anything about those (AKA lanes not being connected 100% correctly, even though they should).

But as long as you report bugs and frustrations with some amount of decency, they are worth hearing to me. Just be aware that for some of them, I already know nothing can be done. Sorry.

Hope you have fun!

Changelog :

v1.1: added reset zone near the end to adress what could happen if you were pushed outside the hole by an interaction with a friend's ball/the flag.
v2.0: fixed post-processing effects that got messed up by the patches. Removed the blur effect from said post-processing. Changed intro to use a ball transform, giving more time to read the panels. Changed lane materials so they are less bouncy, improving the feel of the course.

Relagar = > I added reset zones near the end, hopefully that solves the issue. (it's a bit hard to be sure from just your description, but I tried :winter2019happydog: )

After. Found out as a friend managed to knock me away by the flag

Relagar => Thanks for pointing out that bug/problem. But may I ask if the "knocked out of bounds" thing has to happen in the first part (before the transform and part where the ball rolls on its own), or the second part (after that automatic segment).
If you could tell me, this would save me a lot of time for solving this issue. Thanks.

If you get knocked out of bounds on the last hole, you get stuck in an infinite loop

Thanks @SynthK.
I guess even for virtual minigolf, all creators have their own styles. I am glad you enjoy my own. :lunar2019grinningpig:

One of the best courses ever. You pulled in some of the feel from Gravity Cubes, but still give this course its own feel. Definitely will be coming back to this one a lot. Now my three favorite courses are yours.
