JNR Series 153 EMU

The JNR Series 153 train is an express-type train that was introduced in 1958. It was the first new-performance express type train, and was characterized by a design that was a significant evolution from the Series 80 trains. In particular, the overall shape with a gangway became the face for later JNR express and suburban trains.
Semi-express Tokai trains have been in operation since 1955, connecting Tokyo and the Tokai region. It was originally operated by Series 80 trains, but was quickly replaced by Series 153 trains when Series 153 trains were introduced in 1958. It was one of the oldest trains in Japan, having changed its train type from semi-express to express to limited express, but it was discontinued in 2007 due to the transition to the Shinkansen bullet train.
The Express Naniwa was operated between Tokyo and Osaka from 1956. For a while, it was operated with old-type passenger cars pulled by locomotives, but in 1961, it was replaced by Series 153 trains. It was one of the most luxurious express trains, equipped with a buffet, but was discontinued in 1968, four years after the Shinkansen bullet train started service.
