11. Chaudanne Hill, Besançon, France [Mission]

This is the ninth mission in a chronological series based on the real actions of the 7th Infantry Regiment throughout North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, from 1942 to 1945. This map is dedicated to Private First Class Walter Urba, Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, who was killed in action on September 6th, 1944.

Notes:

-I made the map using a heightmap of the real hill where Fort Chaudanne overlooks the city of Besançon. It is (somewhat) geographically accurate, but scaled way down, and I made adjustments to the layout to facilitate better movement.

-Weapons and environment are mostly historically accurate. I will update the mission later with more authentic squads and inventory.

-My apologies for the long wait. I was on vacation, then had a lot of work to do. I also decided to take my time with this one to make it as nice as possible. I am still working on this series and will not stop until it is complete.

Historical Info:

September 6th, 1944- Besançon, France

By early September, 1944, the 3rd Infantry Division had completed its dash across southern France to ancient fortress city of Besançon. The German communications and supply hub there was of vital strategic importance to both sides, and was bitterly contested. The task of taking the city itself was mainly assigned to the 7th Infantry Regiment.

At 2000, 6 September, new orders from the Commanding General were received which directed the Seventh Infantry to push on and take Besançon immediately. "Iron Mike" wanted the city by daylight. Fort Chaudanne, which the Second Battalion was attacking, had a low silhouette, three feet thick walls and concrete emplacements. An estimated company of enemy were entrenched behind its durable walls and continued to fire flakwagon, machine gun and small arms fire down upon the attacking troops. Reconnaissance of the fort revealed two possible escape routes. It was believed that the enemy would attempt to abandon this position during the night. Companies "E" and "F" worked their way slowly up the hill, employing hand and rifle grenade fire. Taking advantage of the darkness, soldiers climbed the walls of the fort and fired at the enemy within. At one time, the enemy came out apparently to surrender, but continued the fight after an excited soldier fired his Browning automatic rifle. It was not until after daylight that tank destroyers were in position to fire point-blank fire at the doors, battering them apart. A wooden bridge leading into the fort was not sturdy enough to bear the weight of the armor, so infantry were sent in to fight the besieged Germans in close-quarters combat. Men of Company E, 7th Infantry, finally secured the fort, taking 19 prisoners.


ALLIES: General "Iron Mike" O'Daniel has ordered your battalion up the hill mass south of Besançon to seize Fort Chaudanne. Clear every house, and watch the hedges for snipers and machine guns. This is a veteran enemy regiment, so move aggressively and keep up the fire.

AXIS: As a member of Panzer-Grenadier Regiment 110, you are to prevent the Americans from advancing toward Fort Chaudanne. Place your machine guns wisely and make them pay for every field.
