Lore:
The Pillar Tree is a giant species of plant from the Tr'allanga home world that plays a vital role in mainly the cave ecosystem and was used by the Tr'allanga species to terraform their world, making it more liveable.

In the cave swamps; these giant trees filter out most toxic gases from the atmosphere; keep the water clear of toxins, stabilise the acidity of the soil and their glowing, seed filled fruits, provide light that sustains the local plants.

But unlike most plants; the Pillar Tree does not need pollinating; it produces fruits from its roots when it grows big enough to reach the surface; but not many of these seeds actually survive being eaten.

The reason it evolved to do this; is because the caves were a more suitable place to grow than the dry, hot surface; giving it the best chances of survival.

Which brings us on to what it does for the surface.

When these trees grow out of the ground; they grow into giant, wide trees; that produce so much shade; a miniature unique biome often forms under them; which is home to many unique life forms that can't be found anywhere else.

These trees also use the large amount of sunlight, water and nutrients they have access to; as a way to slowly make the area under them more ideal for life to develop; mainly by making the ground more fertile.

Said life also gives back to the tree by defecating or dying to provide compost, picking off parasites, etc.

These trees essentially create a miniature ecosystem under them and support pre-existing ones; allowing them to grow as big as they do and reproduce.

And the Tr'allanga species took advantage of this to make parts of the surface cool enough to expand onto.

They did this by digging to expand the swamp caves; propagating the seeds of these giant trees; maintaining them and keeping them alive till they grew up to the surface and formed a tree.

It took the Tr'allanga species a very long time to do it; well over a thousand years; but once the surface was decently terraformed, they expanded onto it.

Which brings me onto another fact about these Trees; they have no maximum lifespan and will grow as big as they physically can, sometimes growing so big that the branches can't be supported anymore and break off.

Side fact:

When the Tr'allanga home world gets closer to its sun in the summer; Pillar Trees will give off heat from their branches and roots to regulate temperature; and will also produce more fruits with a brighter glow.

This heat and extra light triggers summer in the sub terrain swamps of the Tr'allanga home world; said heat also spreads out into the oceans; triggering summer there as well.
