Description
Story Disabler one-ups making the story optional, and outright disables it for a true sandbox experience.

There are several mods out there that disable Starbound's storyline and help you progress through it independently of you progressing through it. However, all of them either didn't go far enough for my tastes (only making everything else automatically unlocked, while the story still remained there, urging you to complete it), or are no longer in active development and accrued incompatibilities with several other popular mods. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands, and create Story Disabler.

Story Disabler doesn't just make everything automatically unlocked without gating it behind progressing through the storyline; it outright purges the game's story and makes it completely and utterly inaccessible in any shape or form. You start with a fully repaired ship and the coordinates to the Outpost, Esther does not contact you, no Ancient Gates spawn in Lush worlds, and the Ruin has already long been defeated. For all intents and purposes, you are now just a regular person exploring the universe long after the hero of Starbound completed their journey.

Besides restoring the original beta S.A.I.L. portraits and editing the dialogue that S.A.I.L. says to you when you reboot your ship (not just to remove mentions of the ship being broken, but to add flavour inspired by the Racial Intros mod, which I recommend), Story Disabler does not change anything else in the game, so as to preserve mod compatibility as much as possible. Knock yourself out!

I HIGHLY recommend making a new character and universe when installing this mod, as it can and most likely WILL break pre-existing characters due to the changes it makes. Backup your storage folder!

Compatibility

Story Disabler is NOT compatible with the following mods:

Optional Story (Changes the same files)
Sandbox (Changes the same files)
Scripted Artificial Intelligence Lattice (Customisable A.I.) (Unconfirmed, but this mod's changes to SAIL will likely conflict)
Racial AI Restorer (Conflicts)
Racial AI Restorer Recolorer (Redundant)
Frackin Universe (Changes way too much to ever be compatible)

Recommended Mods

Story Disabler pairs well with these mods:

Racial Intros (SAIL's dialogue was explicitly changed to reference this mod)
Betabound! (Thematically fits with a mod that removes the story, as the Beta lacked one)
AnomNom's Outpost Overhaul (It is not compatible by default however; use the compatibility patch)

Special Thanks

I would not be able to create this mod without the assistance of moodkip, Silver Sokolova and Omeruin from the Starbound server, as well as the words of encouragement from various people from Omeruin's Modding Cave. Kaamalauppias - the creator of the Sandbox mod, of which Story Disabler is a spiritual successor to - also helped by allowing me to re-use their mod's assets, so long as credit is rightfully given. Many of this mod's features were taken from Sandbox, so thank you!

The edited text on the preview images were made by my friend hazelnot; meanwhile, the red X texture on the thumbnail is also taken from Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire by GameFreak, because I can't draw lol

Hello! To anyone having issues with being unable to start the Peacekeeper quest from the poster, try talking to Esther if she's showing a main quest mark above her head.

She will, unfortunately, give you the scanning quest and some immersion breaking dialogue, but after completing it, she'll straight up leave you alone and the poster should give you the Peacekeeper quest. So I'd argue that's better than your save being broken.

Now it is possible that having Optional Story accidentally installed at the same time as this mod somehow altered my world files and strangely fixed this issue. It could also be another mod performing first aid, though it would be a mystery which. Regardless, please let me know if this works for you or not.

Hi! Is this compatible with Elithian Races?

Oh, right. Might as well add on how your mod also denies entry to any of the story missions if anyone wanted to go to them anyways for the loot and exclusive drops. Making those story missions (via S.A.I.L.) become completely inaccessible is... not nice at all. How are people gonna get the boss drops, figures, or anything?

Okay... so we gotta talk about your adding of the beta S.A.I.L. portraits and such... it's gotta go. It conflicts and mostly overrides any other S.A.I.L. mod, breaking those mods. Also, having the beta S.A.I.L. and changed dialogue is REDUNDANT as other mods do that already. Please, take out your changes to S.A.I.L. so other mods (including S.A.I.L. dialogue changes) can work with this mod instead of Story Disabler overriding and breaking them in half. It will satisfy a lot of people, especially me with the making of All The Star Mods 2.

is there a version that doesn't change the sails? I use the imm's retextures and this one overrides that one

Can I still acquire any exclusive items that would be obtained via the story? [such as the intro]

Has anyone confirmed whether or not the Customisable AI conflicts with this mod? Was looking to add the Elithian S.A.I.L chip mod so that those guys aren't lonely with their human S.A.I.L while the vanilla races get their cool ones. If not, I might just give it a try to see what happens.

I small compatibility patch is needed for Betabound. Betabound gives you the item "Master Manipulator" as a reward for reaching a certain point in the quest "Opening the Ark". When both mods are installed, you simply receive the item from the start, which makes little sense. A patch to make it so you receive it by some other means would make sense, even if this is not a game-breaking bug by any means.

I think this mod have funny incompatiblity with RPG Growth, invovling Mastery require you to kill story mode bosses, results in unable to do mastery. Heads up on that!

So… the whole “not being able to do the Peacekeeper quests” thing is a bug with your mod? Was wondering why I couldn't start that when I tried clicking on the poster— Was wanting to get the Space Synth instrument legitimately but just can't do the Peacekeeper quests required to get that instrument, noticed that I couldn't complete Nuru's quests either, I did the hunting grounds mission to see if that would jumpstart it but no dice. Am I just screwed out of story quests and things now, or is there any way to fix the broken protectorate sword, do the Nuru quests, and/or do anything related to the story? My fiancé might've chosen the wrong mod, if so…
