Alishan Forest Railway No.31 28t Shay Locomotive
Originally, the Japanese "Fujida Group" purchased one 13-ton, two-cylinder Shay steam locomotive from the Lima Company in the United States. This was the first steam locomotive running the Alishan Railway. Due to the limited financial resources, the "Fujida Group" had had no proper plan for the purchase of trains until the Office of the Taiwan Governor-General officially took over the operation. From 1910 to 1913, in order to carry out the construction work in the high mountain area, a total of eight 18-metric ton, two-cylinder steam Shay locomotives were purchased. In 1912, the 18-ton locomotive failed to climb the steep slope from Erwanping Station to Shenmu Station of the Alishan Railway. Therefore, a three-cylinder 28-ton steam locomotive was introduced. Between 1912 and 1918, a total of 12 locomotives of the type were purchased. After the 1920s, diesel locomotives were invented, and they cost less money to run than steam locomotives, and the Shay locomotives have gradually fallen into disuse. Even so, these more than 20 steam locomotives played a very important role in the most difficult pioneering history of the Alishan Forest Railway.

How to drive
  1. Put some coal into firebox
  2. Push Ignite button.
  3. Switch pump to ON.
  4. Wait for the boiler to make some steam. Use Injector to add water in to the boiler.
  5. The safety valve will automatically prevents boiler from exploding if pressure is bigger than 9.
  6. Set Reverser to 1 will move forward, -1 will move backward.
  7. Regulator controls the speed.
  8. Set Air Valve 0 will put out the fire in the firebox.

Braking
this locomotive supports R-BUS CAT2. Use R-BUS compatible cars for brake coupling.
independent brake notch: only controls the locomotive's brake
0. Release : releases brake pressure rapidly.
1. Running : releases brake pressure. keep in this position when not using brake.
2. Lap : holds the pressure applied to brakes.
3. Service : increases brake pressure.
4. Emergency : increases brake pressure rapidly.

auto brake notch : controls the locomotive and car's brake
0. Release : releases brake pressure rapidly. locomotive's brake will not be released.
1. Running : releases brake pressure. keep in this position when not using brake.
2. Hold : holds the pressure applied to locomotive's brake but will release car's brake.
3. Lap : holds the pressure applied to brakes.
3. Service : increases brake pressure.
4. Emergency : increases brake pressure rapidly.

note:due to the weird way the piston works in the game, regulator does not control steam but reverser does. regulator controls the clutch to adjust speed. put reverser to about 0.4 to go faster.

阿里山森林鉄路 31号 28t級シェイ式蒸気機関車
当初、日本の「藤田組」が、木材の輸送のために、13トン級2気筒のシェイ式蒸気機関車を米国ライマ・ロコモティブ・ワークス社から購入し、これは阿里山森林鉄路で初めての蒸気機関車となりました。「藤田組」の財力が限られていたため、列車の購入計画が全く整備されておらず、台湾総督府が公式に着手してからようやく改善しました。明治43年(1910年)~大正2年(1913年)にかけて、高山地区の建設工事に備え、18トン級のシェイ式2気筒蒸気機関車8基を購入しました。大正元年(1912年)には、阿里山森林鉄路の「二万坪」から「神木」のスイッチバックの急斜面の区間は18トンの機関車では積載できなかったため、阿里山鉄道の「八山」から「神武」までの急な斜面に積載できなかったため、28トン級3気筒蒸気機関車が導入されました。大正元年(1912年)~大正6年(1918年)の間に12台を購入しました。1920年を迎えてにディーゼル機関車が発明され、蒸気機関車以上の馬力を誇るため、シェイ式蒸気機関車は淘汰されるようになりました。しかしながら、この20台あまりの蒸気機関車は、困難を極めた阿里山森林鉄路の開拓の歴史上、大きな役割を果たしたのです。

操縦方法
  1. 火室に石炭を入れます。
  2. Igniteボタンを押して着火。
  3. pumpをONにします。
  4. ボイラーの水が沸くまで待機。Injectorでボイラーに注水します。
  5. 圧力が9以上になると安全弁が作動します。
  6. Reverserを1にすると前進、-1にすると後退します。
  7. Regulatorで速度を制御します。
  8. Air Valveを0にすれば火室の火を消せます。

ブレーキ操作
R-BUS CAT2対応です。R-BUS対応車両を繋げるとブレーキを連動できます。
independent brake notch(単弁ノッチ): 機関車のブレーキのみに作用します。
0. Release : ブレーキ圧を急速に開放します。
1. Operation : ブレーキ圧を開放します。ブレーキを使用しない時はこの位置に。
2. Lap : ブレーキ圧を維持します。
3. Service : ブレーキ圧を増加させます。
4. Emergency : ブレーキ圧を急激に増加させます。

auto brake notch(自弁ノッチ) : 機関車と列車のブレーキに作用します。
0. Release : ブレーキ圧を急速に開放します。機関車のブレーキは開放されません。
1. Operation : ブレーキ圧を開放します。ブレーキを使用しない時はこの位置に。
2. Hold : 機関車のブレーキ圧を維持したまま列車のブレーキを開放します。
3. Lap : ブレーキ圧を維持します。
3. Service : ブレーキ圧を増加させます。
4. Emergency : ブレーキ圧を急激に増加させます。

注意:蒸気ピストンの挙動がアレなのでRegulatorでクラッチ、Reverserで蒸気量を制御するようにしています。Reverserを0.4くらいにすると速く走れます。

I learned a lot from this loco, specifically that it was possible to reverse the pistons by reversing pressure. I swapped out your controller for that with one that I think correctly implements your intention, and I'm very happy with it. Now the "coolant loop" between the firebox and boiler is really tricky. No pumps are required, but a control valve absolutely is. For this version I used the equation " clamp(-10*x-90, 0,1) " in a function block to read the boiler pressure and regulate the "coolant" loop. I have a second controller that tries to regulate the fire to match what is actually being taken out of it by the coolant but haven't published that.

It bypasses brake input from other R-BUS compatible car. so you can double heading with brake coupled.
