Ma'ruul (Saw Lurker)

Lore:
A large semi-aquatic predator from the sub terrain swamps of the Tr'allanga home world.

Ma'ruul mainly hunt prey by hiding under the water in rivers and lakes; their nose and eyes protruding just out of the water.

When prey approaches the water; the Ma'ruul senses the vibrations of its movement; waits for it to get into attack range; and if it gets close enough, lunges out of the water, grabs the prey with its serrated teeth and will try to drag them in to the water.

If successful; the Ma'ruul will thrash violently to disorientate and drown its prey; but if this fails; it will resort to rolling rapidly in an effort to drag its prey in and drown it.

If the Ma'ruul is successful in drowning its prey; it will use its saw like teeth to cut through its preys exoskeleton, cut out chunks of them and swallow the chunks whole; exoskeleton, bones and horns included.

After the chunks are swallowed; a set of internal crushing teeth further break down any bones or exoskeleton for easier digestion.

Ma'ruul will also chase after and eat fish like the Mo'ru; using its powerful tail to chase down its prey at high speed.

But the Ma'ruul can't do this for very long due to the intense energy requirements of moving so fast.

This tail can also be used to bludgeon, cripple prey and deter attackers if needed.

But despite being a skilled predator; the Ma'ruul has an exoskeleton to protect itself from any prey that might fight back; and said exoskeleton also acts as camouflage; making the Ma'ruul resemble a floating stick or log.

The Ma'ruul is also sometimes itself prey to other large animals; but this is not very common; because of its tail being able to cripple things as mentioned.

Ma'ruul have a lifespan of 70-76 years and become sexually mature adults at around 20 years old.

Regarding reproduction; adult males will patrol a territory and violently battle other males over it; the strongest and biggest winning the most territory.

Males will also give off a pheromone from their saliva glands; the smell and its potency being relative to the males testosterone levels, size and strength.

Females will choose a male to mate with based on how strong their pheromones are.

Males will gather a collection of females and let them all live in his territory; under his protection.

Females, after mating with their chosen male; will lay their eggs in a nest made of sticks and closely guard them for their 3 month incubation period; meanwhile the male will hunt food and bring it back for all of his females.

Once the eggs hatch; the female will keep a close guard of her babies till they reach 7 years old; at which point their big enough to hunt on their own and will leave the territory and nest permanently.

Females will also stay with a male until he either passes away or loses his territory.

If a male dies of natural causes the females will continue to guard their eggs in that spot; and will take turns hunting for food themselves and even guard the area.

But; if a male loses his territory to an invading male and has babies or eggs in his territory; the invading male will murder all the previous males babies, destroy his eggs, forcefully claim all the females as his and try to kill the original male.

If the original male somehow manages to survive this; he will often come back with violent revenge in mind.
If hes able to kill the invading male; he will also murder all of the invaders babies and eggs, and then reclaim his females.
