Please visit the Mobile Riverine Force Association[www.mrfa.org], the Seawolf Association[seawolf.org], or the Gamewardens Association[www.tf116.org] for more information about these amazing sailors and soldiers...and if you happen to meet a Vietnam Veteran, please take a minute to shake his or her hand and say "Welcome Home". Even now, some Vietnam Veterans are only beginning to get the acknowledgement and gratitude they should have received the day they stepped foot back on U.S. soil.

To each and every Vietnam Veteran: Thank you and Welcome Home.

Field artillery suitably adapted to the riverine environment was a prerequisite for successful operations, and forward howitzer batteries became a critical part of the US Army's doctrine in riverine warfare. Often set up on makeshift platforms connected by wooden pontoons, these positions could be found across Brown/Green water operations being used in constant support of ARVN forces and special operations.

The river banks being so soft and muddy that they simply are not negotiable by any type of truck, or track vehicle for that matter, there were virtually no firing positions to be found along the streams, canals, and rivers of the Mekong Delta. Faced with this simple reality, experiments with Navy pontoons were conducted to determine whether a 105 could be fired from the water with any degree of accuracy and stability. It was found that these barges could be towed by Navy watercraft, and numerous combat operations were run, day and night, to confirm the effectiveness of field artillery used in this mode. Upon verification that this was a feasible method of operation, six riverine artillery barges were fabricated and pressed into service.

The mobile riverine field artillery battalion was born to be a highly mobile force which, when escorted by Navy boats, moved independently and mainly at night into firing positions. Just before daylight, when the batteries were finally anchored alongside the river bank, this artillery was capable of giving close and accurate fire support to ground operations around the clock in the area of operations. Without question, the creation of the "floating" field artillery battalion is the greatest single innovation in riverine operations. Had the mobile riverine force been
required to rely on the original concept of using towed howitzers moved by armored troop carriers, it is doubtful whether the force would have met with any success at all.
