Aachen Cathedral, Aachen, Germany

Description
***Prop pack missing issue fixed! Remember to subscribe to it.

Requested by Charlemagne, Aachen Cathedral was founded in 8th Century in Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), Holy Roman Empire, now in Germany. Coronations of many Holy Roman Emperors took place here.

The central part under the dome was a part of Charlemagne's Palace, named Palatine Chapel. It is the only well preserved part of the palace left from the Carolingian era, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Architectural style mixture

Many extension building works were executed over the centuries, resulting in this peculiar appearance of the Cathedral with mixed architectural styles (See photo above):

- 8-9th century, Carolingian-Romanesque:
original chapel under the dome and the bell tower

- 14-15th century, Gothic:
Choir, Chapel of St Matthew, St Anne, St Charles & Hubert, St Nicholas

- 17th century: the dome

- 18th century, Baroque:
Chapel of Hungary, entrance porch

- 19th century, Neogothic: West Tower (the bell tower)

About the Asset (read)

This is a level 3 unique building. The model consists of 10 sub-meshes with additional pinnacle sculpture props.

***Aachen Cathedral prop pack is required for this asset.

Diffuse texture: parts of the stone facade & relief texture, parts of stone window frames, parts of dome roofs, railing, roof toppers are modified from artworks for Canon's paper model by K.Yoshinaka / STpers. As for my own texture, I focused more on roofs, stained glass windows, sculpture relief details.

Saint statue parts' meshes and textures are modified from noe-3d.at's royalty-free models for commercial use/public domain on Sketchfab.

If you play with snow themes, there will be minor UV map bugs showing up on some of the roofs. I will consider fixing this later.

There's less roof lighting than the real building as the vanilla flood light is very bright. No facade, ground lighting is included as assets with this kind of lighting usually tend to get too bright with street lights and lighting from assets nearby. You have to DIY this part as well as the surrounding fences and small streets. Use Move It for the surrounding beautification.

Asset recommendation for surrounding

For the style of Aachen, smaller west European houses, without strong styles or with more medieval features would be a better fit. I recommend building assets by Lost Gecko, street shop props, stalls, and French Lamp Pack by Gèze, Christmas market assets by Titan if you are in a festive mood.

Surrounding props and assets upcoming

There will be customized cobble tile decal for the square on the north side of the Cathedral, where the Christmas market takes place, and a pinnacle fountain on the south side.

My next building asset will be Aachen Town Hall, which sits on the original Charlemagne's residence on the other end of the square.

Hi; perhabs a bit late to the party, but I'd be very happy to see both new assets of yours for CS1 as well as this one's sub-buildings individually - medieval/gothic-themed assets were rare before and chances to get some more of them have only diminished since.

@c95samuel Thanks! I'm planning to make new assets and there is an on-going one, but I only continue when I have free time. Also the discouraging thing is that I'm not sure if people are still playing CS1 since CS2 was released, which sadly has no workshop :(

Thanks! You are too kind. I'm still sparing time to create more assets of historical architectures. Hopefully you guys will enjoy!

This is BY FAR the most beautiful and detailed asset I have seen. You are very talented. Thank you for the pleasure of being able to freely use this.

@thomas Thanks! I did check this Cathedral but I planned to do St Vitus Cathedral in Prague, which is in similar form. However I already have a long list to do before starting to work on this one.:steamfacepalm:

@Guthea Not sure what "too big" means. The scale of this asset is only slightly larger than the original scale, because some people work with larger scales in the game. This is accordingly a compromised decision. The dome is the only main body of this asset and the rest parts are submeshes so I do not recommend using PO, Procedural Objects on this asset.

Let me know if there are many people wish to have the side parts of the cathedral individually available in game.
