Description
Play as the great Saint and legendary Varangian, Olga and Igor; in Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

The region known as Ruthenia in Latin or Kievan Rus' was first populated by the Eastern Slavs who may have been led there by their fabled progenitor Rus. The late Migration period saw East Slavs maintain their presence in the region, competing with Finno-Ugric and Turkic peoples. Around the ninth century the Vikings of Sweden settled in what would become Novgorod after their leader Rurik was invited there. After Rurik, his dynasty would dominate trade and civil society between the Baltic Sea and Black Sea. Rurik's successor, Oleg, would seize the city of Kiev, thus beginning the Kievan Rus', but the Greeks of Eastern Rome would know these people as the proud Varangians. Gradually this prideful and warlike people would convert to Christianity and favour the Byzantine Rites. Eventually dynastic infighting would lead to struggles against Poland and Lithuania in the west as well as the Turks and later Mongol-Tartars in the east; the former subsuming Rus' and the latter destroying Rus'. Without Rus', leadership fell upon Novgorod or Moscow, the two powers vied for influence and the many titles of all the Russias.

    Dear @Gerwaz and Green Shockwave,

Any steppe people that wandered into the Carpathians interacted with the Rus'ians. When the Rurikovichs under Oleg first took Kiev, they would follow the rivers into the Black Sea. Rus'ians immediately competed with the Khazar Turks. I am uncertain if any Khazars were subsumed by Varangians, but it would set the trend of steppe peoples, such as Cumans, interacting and having intermarriage with the Rus' nobles. As for Scythians, it wouldn't surprise me if those Iranian nomads also intermarried with the Slavs towards the end of their culture. It would be similar to how the Iranian Alans both settled in the Caucasus and migrated into Europe to ultimately be at the mercy of Germanic tribes, the Vandals did adopt their remnants. The Ukrainians, like the Rus'ians long before them, descend from the mythical Rus who led his tribe east, or that is what legend says.

    Best Regards,
    Strudeler Tarts
