SS Jervis Bay

Here is the SS Jervis Bay, a passenger liner mostly remembered for her service in WW2.

She was a ship built for the Commonwealth Line. The line struggled with operating costs and merged with the Aberdeen Line, a subsidiary of the White Star Line. When WW2 broke out, the Royal Navy used the ship as an armed merchant cruiser. She was the only convoy escort of Convoy HX 84. The convoy encounter the German heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer. In an attempt to allow the convoy to escape, Jervis Bay, despite being hopelessly out gunned, fought against the Admrial Scheer. Jervis Bay kept firing her guns until she was sunk. Admiral Scheer managed to sink 5 ships in the convoy (with 1 ship being sunk by an aircraft of the Luftwaffe). Thanks to the efforts of the Jervis Bay, 31 out of the 37 ships in the convoy escaped, and Captain Gegen of Jervis Bay was awarded the Victoria Cross. Today, many memorials of Jervis Bay exist in Bermuda, Canada and Britain.
