Special conditions of detention: Physical contact with SCP-409 must never be allowed. Anyone who comes into physical contact with SCP-409 should be immediately quarantined along with all items used in the transportation of the object. SCP-409 should be kept in a granite box at all times. Any transportation of SCP-409 must be carried out in a sealed granite container. The remnants of the effect of the SCP-409 object should be enclosed in granite cases along with all items used during transportation.

Description: SCP-409 resembles a large quartz crystal approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 0.6 m (2 ft) wide. Any object in contact with SCP-409 will begin to crystallize after three (3) hours. This effect occurs with any material other than granite. Crystallization spreads at a rate of about 2.5 cm per minute and rebuilds the entire object or organism, inside and out. Victims report that this effect causes terrible pain and resembles frostbite. After complete crystallization, the victims begin to make creaking and clicking sounds for twenty (20) minutes before exploding into thousands of fragments with great force.

Any person who touches an object or fragments of an object instantly begins to crystallize. Nothing can reverse the effect in organic beings, not even amputation of the affected area. Inorganic matter crystallizes only a few centimeters around the point of contact. SCP-409 was discovered in [DELETED], under a pile of crystal fragments at a depth of several feet. Personnel losses during the detection were high.

Appendix 409-1: At the suggestion of Dr. [500-0021D], subject 409-D5 was affected by the effects of SCP-409 until it was almost completely "crystallized". After that, he was influenced by SCP-500. Full recovery was achieved after 9 days. The subject reported that he continued to feel pain in the parts of the body that had undergone crystallization, even after the estimated recovery time. The pain disappeared 13 days after the start of treatment. It is unknown whether the pain was mental or physical in the last 4 days.

Appendix 409-2: Comprehensive testing did not provide information about why crystallization occurs. SCP-409 and the fragments created by it are no different from any other quartz crystal. The effect is similar to the action of seed crystals, in which an already existing crystal is placed in a solution, which leads to further crystallization. However, SCP-409 has its effect on any solid matter, and it does not require continued contact. It has not yet been clarified why SCP-409 differs from other quartz crystals and why granite is the only material immune to crystallization.
