The high point of the perspective of the Boulevard Aristide Briand, the central market very early finds its definitive place in the urban composition of Claude Ferret. The project, entrusted to the architects Morisseau and Simon, acquires its elegance with the participation of the engineer Laffaille who works at Notre-Dame. Laffaille wins the consultation by proposing to implement a single thin veil of pleated concrete (9 to 10 cm). The shell shape frees up a large space for sales. On the facade, a concrete and glass filling ensures the sealing of the whole. Large canopies independent of the hull soar to mark the entrances. The thirteen vaults are anchored to the ground by cables to keep the building surrounded and extend over the roof to protect the shopkeepers' benches from the “open wind”. As a keystone, a treatment of glass blocks provides the hall with subtle overhead lighting. If the investment of the architects remains discreet, that of the engineer results in a technical prowess without equivalent in Royan. The market heralds the completion of Notre-Dame, with the same dose of innovation administered by Bernard Laffaille and with assured continuity, after his death in 1955, by René Sarger. The Royan Market is paving the way for a number of projects that will follow its lines, either identically, for the Bucharest State Circus, or inspired by it, for the Nanterre covered market project (not realized).
