Built side by side along Louis Lair Boulevard, the “California” and “Brazilia” double villas refer to the “American way of life”. Designed for the two Royannais entrepreneurs Prainville and Taunay, Louis Simon’s project faithfully incorporates the principles of the modern architecture of Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus: no decorative drift disturbs the purity of the architectural design. Three interlocking parallelepipeds make up the bulk of the volume, each dedicated to a defined part of the house. A regular weft of columns, intersected by a few load-bearing walls, offers the architect great freedom. The ground floor, freed by the use of stilts, allows a car to park there and drop its passengers under cover. Only the circulations remain in relation to the ground. The living rooms are, for their part, distributed in the floors. The service spaces, relegated to the front, justify a bare and relatively closed facade on the street. The rear, housing bedrooms and living room, opens largely on the garden, shooting its terraces and balconies towards the sea. This project is the result of a faithful collaboration between Louis Simon and the companies Taunay and Prainville, throughout the Reconstruction.
