Historical Notes:

The third italian dreadnought and the second ship in the Conte di Cavour class, named after the great roman general Julius Caesar. Cesare didn't do much during the First World War, but was extensively reconstructed during the 1930's and both participated, and survived the Second World War. In 1949 she was given to the Soviet Union as war reparations and renamed Novorossiysk, only to be sunk in 1955 by an explosion of unclear origin, killing 608 men.

Armament as of 1943 consisted of 2x3 320mm/44 M1934 guns, 2x2 320mm/44 M1934 guns, 6x2 120mm/50 M1933 guns, 4x1 100mm/47 M1928 DP guns, 6x2 37mm/54 M1938 AA guns and 8x2 20mm/65 M1935 AA guns.

The reconstruction carried out on the Conte di Cavour class during the 1930's was one of the most elaborate ever performed on old dreadnoughts, surpassed only by the reconstruction of the Andrea Doria class. Afterwards these came to be known as italian style reconstructions.

For the Conte di Cavour class, this consisted of the installation of a clipper bow over the existing bow, removal of two out of the four propeller shafts, removal of the entire superstructure minus the tripod mainmast, reduction in height of said mainmast, removal of the amidships turret, installation of new engines and funnels in the position formerly occupied by the amidships turret, a new superstructure with multiple fire directors and rangefinders, boring out the main guns from 305mm to 320mm and replacing all other armament with new weapons in entirely new mounts.
