Description and history of the building :

Architect: Marc QUENTIN
Address: District of Foncillon in Royan, Charente-Maritime, France
Date of construction: 1956
Program: 2 identical apartments living room + 2 bedrooms

Massively inscribed in the corner of the streets of Doctor Paul Métadier and Jean Gouly, this imposing white parallelepiped illustrates, a little late, the constructive principles advocated in the 1920s. Lifted off the ground by a dark and impenetrable hollow ground floor, the building seems to float above the small garden. Only the entrance leading to the circulations and two small pilings moor this concrete liner towards the ground. A circumflex canopy of blue concrete leads the visitor under cover towards the door. Four metal posts prevent it from flying away. On the facade, the architect imposes no hierarchy. The windows, all identical, allow no presumption as to the nature of the rooms. The stairwell, however, indicates its presence through an organized succession of horizontal daylights. Sometimes, in the spandrel, alternating concrete claustras allow an additional contribution of light. The slatted shutters, mounted on rails, on the contrary keep away the most ardent rays of the sun. Marc Quentin signs here a project close to the Grille-Pain house of Pierre Marmouget. But, if we sometimes tend to confuse the work of the two men, their attention to detail gives them their own and recognizable identity.
