Description
Current Mod Version: v1_1 -- Read the Changelog / Update Notes here!
Replaces: Hunting Rifle
SOUNDS NOT INCLUDED -- I RECOMMEND USING THE FOLLOWING ADD-ONS:
L4D1 Hunting Rifle Sounds
Beta Firing Sounds

The following mod replaces the default Hunting Rifle's animations with imitations of some of the animations that you see in videos of early builds of Left 4 Dead, applied to the Left 4 Dead 2 TLS model.

I was originally just going to slap the animations that I ported for my Ranch Rifle mod and call it a day, but then I decided I wanted to spice things up a bit more to make this add-on stand out more.

In the video used as reference the Hunting Rifle uses a running animation that resembles the L4D1 Pump Shotgun's running animation, so I ported that one over and tried to apply it to the Hunting Rifle's pose to try and get a convincing run animation, the idea that this was possible was of course inspired by Querentin's excellent work on his L4D 1+2 anims mods.

However, I originally just parented the left arm to the weapon bone and thought that would be enough and I was actually about to release it in that state but the more I looked at it the more I realized having it set up like that made the running animation look like butts, so I went back and learned how to do some IK trickery to translate the pump shotgun's running animation to the Hunting Rifle in a much more convincing manner, this is the result.

I'm not a beta super-fanatic or anything of the sort, I just thought these animations looked nice and I hadn't seen any other mod that did something like this, and those that I did see were either privated or just not available to the public so this is my own take on the same idea, but available for the public to grab.

Since I re-did the port from scratch I also wanted to take the chance to clean up everything so that anyone who looks into these files doesn't think "what in tarnation" (much). I have yet to figure out some quirks to perfect my porting techniques but overall this mod is a bit cleaner and more presentable in both the front and back-end of things compared to my Ranch Rifle mod. I'm very happy with the work done for this mod and hopefully it is of good quality.

I should make a very important note and clear up that I do not have access to any type of unused beta content or anything of the sort, this was not leaked from any private project or from some super secret source either. The files used for the creation of this mod are all available within the game's public files, I merely took them and stitched them together for a single mod.

I didn't want to try and remake the firing animation as I thought it was too weak and would've detracted from the value of the mod, so instead I simply reduced the recoil from the firing animation so that the gun doesn't fly out of your hands, best of both worlds I suppose. A version that uses the L4D1 Hunting Rifle model and also uses a more appropriate L4D1-style origin is on the way, just need to model the missing half of the weapon first and then we'll be in business.

Anyone who wishes to take these animations and compile them to a different model is absolutely welcome to do so, you do not need to ask for permission or anything like that, just don't forget to credit Valve and Turtle Rock Studio for the animations as they belong to them.

This add-on is compatible with retextures and sound mods, it is not compatible with mods that edit the Hunting Rifle itself or mods that mess with the animations.

Known bugs:
  • Since these animations were made for the original Hunting Rifle model there will be some clipping on the right hand (the TLS model and the original model have different proportions).

Credits:
  • Turtle Rock Studio -- Animations.
  • Valve -- Animations.

Thoughts on doing something like this but with L4D2 style look poses and walking anims?

I see the issue now, it happens when you right-click-throw a gascan.

Will fix, thank you for the report.

I like this because the default hunting rifle is one of the only guns they don't chamber while reloading.
