Thou Shalt Make War On Thy Neighbor

Description
No longer actively maintained - but probably still works
I do no longer update my mods to support new content. That said, almost all my mods basically never need actual updating after patches. So this mod will very likely still work, just not affect recently added content. I do start the game once after patches to check if my mods cause crashes, and intend to keep fixing those critical problems if they arise.

Overview
AI factions will mostly declare war only on factions they share a land or sea border with. Reduces war declarations from factions at the other end of the map.

Features
  • AI factions are blocked from declaring war on a faction - including the player - if they do not own a region that borders one owned by the other faction
  • or one that borders a sea region the other faction also has a border with
  • makes AI factions focus on nearby enemies they can effectively attack

Details
  • affects only factions that own at least one region
  • if a faction that previously did not hold any land (eg Beastmen, Chaos) acquire land, they become restricted in declaring new wars on non-neighbors
  • if a faction loses their last region, they can again declare war on anyone (although it usually just means they are going to die)
  • factions may still indirectly declare war on far-away factions through alliances and vassalage
  • the mod never ends any war that was already ongoing
  • once a faction has gained the ability to declare war on another faction because of close borders, they remain able to declare war even if the borders change again
  • vassals are not treated as sovereign factions; if a faction borders the land of somebody who is a vassal, it is as if they were bordering the land of the vassal's master faction (they can only declare war on the master)
  • the player can still declare war on anybody
  • scripted war declarations, like from a mission or dilemma, should not be affected

Compatibility
  • Savegame compatible: No. You can enable and use it with an ongoing campaign but not stop using it; the war blocks remain in place after the mod has been disabled.
  • Multiplayer: Unknown, go test it and report!
  • SFO, Radious: Unknown, go test it and report!
  • Known incompatibilities: None

Troubleshooting
Before reporting issues, make sure that you have the current version of the mod. Steam quite often fails to actually pull the newest version after a mod has gotten an update. To make certain that you have the current version, unsub from the mod, then wait a few seconds. Steam will then delete the mod file from your hard drive. Then resub to the mod and Steam will download the current version to your hard drive.

Extra Info
A faction is permanently unblocked as a potential war target if it gains a land border or shared sea region, even if it's just for one turn.

An option is available to also allow war declarations on factions that are a neighbor of the immediate neighbors of the faction in question. This allows a lot more wars while still limiting those from factions that are very far away. I recommend using this option because otherwise the campaign is too peaceful and it's too easy for the player to avoid wars by using allied factions as buffer. The option is however disabled by default. To enable it, you have to use the Mod Configuration Tool: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2815354316
