Douglas X-3 Stiletto

The X-3 was an experimental aircraft in the early 1950s. They wanted to investigate some design features of an aircraft suitable for sustained supersonic speeds. Small wings and a very long nose and fuselage were the result. Lockheed designers used data from the X-3 tests for the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter later.

This Nabi_1978 creation can reach supersonic speeds at level flight. Top speed is higher than 1300 kph. Controls are optimized for high speeds. Fastest speed with nose down was 1905kph (1184mph) so far. You can rise up the nose and landing assistance will give you some flaps and gear before touchdown. It is necessary to keep holding up the nose and to fly with some feeling on the elevator near to surface, hold RMouse for engine boosts. Landing assistance will do the last meters almost without steering. This can be practiced best on the Test-Zone map. Not the easiest thing to land but there are no gimbal cheats, only aerodynamic...

WSAD = Elevator/roll
Space = toggle engines to full power
RMouse = Hold for engine boost
Lalt = Toggle engines for "slow" flight (~450kph)

Die X-3 war ein experimentelles Flugzeug in den frühen1950er Jahren. Man wollte einige Design-Elemente für überschallschnelle Geschwindigkeiten testen. Bei Lockheed hat man später die Daten aus dem Projekt für das Design des F-104 Starfighter genutzt.

Diese Kreation kann Überschallgeschwindigkeit im Horizontalflug erreichen. Wenn die Triebwerke ausgeschaltet werden bleiben einige davon an, um eine Landung zu ermöglichen. Man kann die Nase etwas oben halten und man bekommt automatisch Landeklappen und Fahrwerk vor dem Aufsetzen. Es ist dabei nötig die Nase immer hoch zu halten und mit Gefühl im Höhenruder nahe an den Boden heran zu fliegen, um eine sanfte Landung zu machen. Dies kann man in der Testzone gut üben.

:-) In many ways it was a disappointment. The intended strong jet engine could not be used, so they had to install a weaker one. As a negative result it only could achieve supersonic speeds at a 15° dive angle and it was very difficult to fly. So it never could show its full potential. But the futuristic design and the new materials (titan) were made for mach 2+ top speeds... The fun fact is that this trailmakers version seems to have a better performance as the original plane.
