Frisian Class 16.05
Frisian Urban Railway

Background Information

The Frisian Class 16 is a Frisian general-purpose steam tank locomotive. It was intended to act as an all-round general workhorse for lighter loads, being catered towards passenger and goods transportation, although still being capable in terms of industrial transport. It was mostly used in conjunction with the Class 12 and 14, especially as more Class 12 locomotives began to be repurposed as shunters. The Class 16.05 was a variation of this which featured an internal condenser, massively decreasing the amount of water stops that needed to be made by reducing wastage.

The Frisian Class 16 was designed by the Frysk Spoarbaan Komitee (more specifically by Ljouwerter Motorbedriuw - a member of the FSK - which itself is a subsidiary of Ljouwert Marine Technologyen). It was found that the Class 12 was far too weak to pull some loads, so a stronger alternative was devised before development was even complete. The result was the Class 16. While it is slower than its older counterpart, it more than makes up for it with its power, although it may be rather unwieldy at times.

This one in particular is one of the versions operated by the FSK. You could use it to pull around your Stormlink carriages, or to lug some stock wagons or ore hoppers.

Operator's Manual

I would like to preface this by saying that the Class 16 is by no means an easy-to-operate vehicle. The Class 16 is even harder to use than the Class 12 because of its unstable nature, but it's very useful when you get the hang of it. I would recommend having a friend on board as your fireman to keep your firebox stoked.

In order to start the Frisian Class 16, you must follow this process;
1) Enter the cab through the doors in either side.
2) Navigate to the left side of the cab.
3) Push the cylinder lever button (near your feet) for at least 5 seconds. This will ensure the cylinders are empty. If you are restarting the train after stopping it before, this may release some steam, which is normal.
3) Press and hold the firebox hatch open while you shovel in 2 units of coal.
4) Press the 'Air Pump Steam Valve', 'Water Feed Pump Valve' and 'Steam Generator Valve' buttons.
5) Turn the 'Vacuum Brake' lever to its full setting (1.00) at the driver's position.
6) Turn the 'Electrical Firebox Igniter' key.
7) While the firebox heats up, shovel more coal into the firebox until it is full. Make sure you check it every minute or so to make sure it's as full as possible when the train is running. It would be a good idea to have a friend to help with this.
8) Wait for the boiler pressure to rise to at least 5 units. You may want to wait longer if you are pulling a heavy train.
9) While you wait, turn the 'Reverser Wheel' up to 0.1. You may lower it to 0.04 if you want to cruise at a lower speed.
10) Release the vacuum brake & push the regulator up to your desired value. The train will start to move.
11) Done! Make sure you keep an eye on the gauges in case you need to micromanage something. This train takes a little bit of practice to use. Don't feel bad if you can't get in and use it straight away. It would be a good idea to have a friend on board to help you keep an eye on everything.

IMPORTANT:
- The 'Reverser Wheel' is effectively like a gear selector lever. Between 0 and 0.04, the train will move forwards at its regular speed. Between 0.05 and 0.1, it will speed up (but have less torqure) Anything below -0.01 will set the train into reverse. Make sure your regulator is set to 0.00 before you change this.
- Do NOT idle with the blower valve active. The boiler will overheat and explode. It is ONLY to be used when you need a boost to your power when pulling a train.
- The train's water tanks can be refilled from a blue coloured hose anchor located on the top of the train.
- If the train is starting to overheat and rise in pressure, turn off the firebox igniter and hold down the button you pressed in step 3. Make sure your blower valve is also set to be off.
- The Class 16's control scheme is very similar to my other train, the Class 12, so I recommend practicing on that train if you can't get it to work for you properly.

Known Errors

Vehicle sometimes randomly explodes near rail bridges
After lots of troubleshooting, I can confirm that this is not an issue with the vehicle - for some reason, the developers built the bridges and the slopes leading up to them weirdly, so the train sometimes hits an invisible object and explodes. I would suggest turning off vehicle damage when you're near them to counteract this issue. Unfortunately, I cannot fix it.

Train's boiler explodes sometimes
This is not a particularly easy train to use. Since it has to be able to pull heavy loads, I had to strike a balance in its power. It has to be able to move on its own, but also able to pull heavy loads. This means that it's always going to be a little overpowered for when it's idling or running on its own, so you have to manage the boiler pressure. There are two different pressure release valves in the cab to help you with this. Give it some practice, learn its niches, and it'll be second nature, and soon it won't explode anymore. For an easy solution, just take the coal out of the firebox and let it cool down when you're not using it, and then restart it again when you need it.

Also, to the realistic steam train lovers, sorry about the firebox hatch. I had a design oversight way too late in its development, so I couldn't put a door any other way. You can imagine the fire coming out of the firebox yourself.
