And why soot thrower? The maximum allowed temperature of the second stage on the Ivchenko AI-25 turbines was 650°C. That is below the temperature of burning kerosene fuel! Anyone who had the luck to stand behind a Yak-40 with its engines running knows how a kerosene face pack feels.

The famous soot thrower. Why was the third engine mounted on the tail of the YAK-40? To compensate for the aerodynamic drag and added weight caused by the third engine.
