The ProDev did come back with a module design that that didn't require first investing in the MMSB Core. They dubbed this the MMSB Autonomous module.

There is currently a missing feature in career mode where crew
assignments are not copied from the ship template along with the crew roles.

My work around is to playtest the ship in career mode (Main Menu > More > Ship Library > [select ship] > Playtest), take notes or a screenshot, and then manually do crew assignments when I load career mode.

Hopefully Walt & co. can fix this issue in the near future.
