Bone Crafting

Description
Adds new crafting options to build most furniture and items using bones & horns at the Bone Crafter Workshop (vanilla graphic, I will learn how to art eventually). Currently works with critter bones only. No Elf bone tables (yet).

To clarify, this mod uses the vanilla block item and forces other materials into it. What you're describing is a custom item that functions as a block, using other materials. This is possible, but I'm fairly certain you would lose the unique descriptions of the bone source.

It may be possible to work around that, but I'd have to really dig into it. To my knowledge, blocks are the only item in the mod which can not be stockpiled (they can still be dumped to a QSP and otherwise function as normal for building).

I would think you could add an option to the craft workshop to fashion bones into "bone" blocks that are named such, but not made of real bone (maybe ivory or some white material) to ensure they are usable for crating as normal blocks.

Ah right the Ethics thing. I had forgotten about that, thanks for the update.

You can still make bone blocks and they work for all block-tasks, you just can't stockpile them like other blocks. All other furniture works with stockpiles per usual.

If I'm understanding the existing discussion correctly: this workbench works properly and easily, so long as you don't make Bone Blocks? No issues with the displayed Chests, Statues, and Beds?

I looked into it briefly - The use of body parts from sentient creatures is tied to civilization ethics, similar to how Goblins own slaves and Elves eat the dead. It might be possible to inject new ethics without overwriting the entire base Dwarf file, but I am not certain

Also, this would mean that all bones are ok for crafting, including fellow Dwarves, which would almost certainly make them unhappy (felt joy seeing a table made from his pet cat is a far cry from a table made of his spouse). Plus the impact of a Macabre Mood is diminished when that kind of crafting is commonplace

Lastly, I got an answer from the devs about bone blocks not being listed in the stockpile. This is a hard-coded issue unfortunately, bone & block simply lack the ability to talk with each other, as it were. The best solution I can think of right now is building your workshop and critter corpse stockpile near the project site. You can also create a dump zone to move the bone blocks, then reclaim them

Hey, were you able to figure out how to make Elf bones useable? :D

I just confirmed that the blocks can be marked as rubbish (dumped). If you create a dump zone near your work site, you can move them that way. Not ideal obviously, but hopefully that helps a little until I can figure this out.

Glad to hear you're having fun with it! I've done a little investigating; The blocks lose their inherent property 'bone material', and I can not figure out why. I've tried forcibly assigning a new material like stone or cheese, to no avail. I'm going to keep digging, but this might be one of those things that got lost in translation from Classic. I will know for certain in the next few days.

Hi! I'm not finding 'bone' under the bars/blocks stockpile category, nor it shows on any other stock as well - it's as if the game can't recognize bone blocks as a category, so it stockpiles only at the crafting station... that makes it a lot harder to build megastructures (we're building a 15z bone block lighthouse). Oh, and his mod is amazing! I just love it, a must have!!
