SS St. Paul

Here is the SS St. Paul, an American ocean liner named after the capital of Minnesota.

SS Saint Paul, and her sister, SS St. Louis, launched one year earlier, were the first major passenger ships built in the United States since the Collins Line. In 1899, St. Paul was traveling to England from New York with Guglielmo Marconi on board supervising the ship's new wireless telegraph, being the first ship to report her arrival with the Marconi wireless telegraph. The 2 ships were chartered by the US Navy as auxiliary cruisers when the Spanish-American war broke out. The most notable actions of the 2 ships was when St. Louis took part in the destruction of the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, and the St. Paul taking part in the second battle of San Juan against a Spanish cruiser and destroyer. Both ships survived the war and were returned to passenger service when the war was over. St. Paul was involved in a collision with the cruiser HMS Gladiator in the Needles Channel, sinking the cruiser in shallow water. During WW1, St. Paul served as a transport for the US Shipping Board before being handed over to the Navy as a troopship, but the conversion was cancelled after she capsized in New York. She was refloated, and handed back to her owners before being scrapped in 1919. Her sister St. Louis saw service in WW1 as the troopship USS Louisville, having engaged 2 submarines during the war, and after the war brought American soldier back home. She returned passenger service as St. Louis, but in 1920 caught fire in New Jersey, refloated and scrapped in 1925.
