IceWorld: Feast or Famine

Description
Part of the IceWorld mod collection, which adds vanilla-friendly features to enhance the "always winter" gameplay experience.

The "Feast or Famine" mod adds content relating to the nutritional challenges of living in a food-scarce environment. If you've ever found yourself starving out on the ice and wishing that you had more options to help stave off hunger, this is the mod for you.

New Mechanics for Overeating
- Colonists and animals that overeat will gain the 'overfed' condition, temporarily reducing their hunger rate and movement speed
- Continued overeating will result in pain and vomiting
- Food binges should seem more realistic, and small animals will not be as wasteful when eating large meals

Overcooked Meals
- Incompetent cooks have a 60% chance to overcook a meal when they otherwise would have made a food-poisoned meal
- Overcooked meals taste bad and offer less nutrition, but have the benefit of not causing food poisoning
- Should result in fewer meals causing food poisoning due to cooking skill (but risk from dirty kitchen is unaffected)

Animal Food Bowls
- Players can construct food bowls to manage their pets' diets without having to rely on allowed areas
- Players can specify which foods should be hauled to a food bowl and which animal types can consume from it
- Should allow players to feed pets responsibly without having to restrict them to certain areas of their base

This mod is in active development - stay tuned for more updates!

Compatibility:
- This mod fully replaces the 'Binge Responsibly' mod and should be compatible with its saved games

I've actually been trying to add ice blocks to one of my other mods but making it vanilla-friendly has been tricky. Knowing that there are ice walls in the game now does make it easier.

I'll look into updating the overeating mechanic for 1.6. It's right on the edge of vanilla-friendly so it's been lower on my list of priorities. I also haven't gotten as many food binge mental breaks recently, which just means that I'm not noticing it as much.

Adding to the echo of others' appreciation for these! I very often play in moderate to extreme cold biomes and while these areas should and are challenging, humans have figured out how to survive in lots of places! The overeating mechanic is my favourite, particularly for caravans and low-tech runs. There's ice caverns now which I haven't played too much with, but they could be interesting to tinker with. They don't yield usable blocks which is a shame! You could do something with that if you wanted to.

Thanks for you work :)

Overcooked Meals for 1.6 have been broken out into their own mod: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3530384266

yup, it's simple but i love this mod

I'd love to see this continued, it's a must-have for both the overeating adjustments and the overcooked meals. (The animal bowls are neat too, but there are other ways to manage animal diet so that's less important to me.)

Still around. Are there certain mechanics here you're eager to have for 1.6? I'm a huge fan of the vanilla experience and I really just mod for myself so I was going to play around with Odyssey a bit before deciding if I want to continue using these.

Are ya still around Binchcannon?

Anyone know how the over eating mechanics play with mods like Vanilla nutrient paste expanded and Connected Bed (continued)?
I'd love to use this but I don't want to overfeed my patients and have them constantly puking while unconscious and in the hospital, as funny of an image as that seems

Updated for 1.5!

@VolatileGlitchAviator - I'm still supporting this mod, but at the moment I don't have any new features planned, just polish. These changes already address the most frustrating aspects of playing in food scarce environments, and I'm hesitant to add anything else that would make the game less challenging. I am planning to release another IceWorld mod at some point.

@ Athenna - I mainly play with my own mods so I can't really speak much to compatibility. I know there's a popular mod out there that allows bars to overextend, which sounds awesome, but I'd be surprised if it works well with these overeating mechanics. Speaking for myself, the overcooked meals have been the most fun aspect of this mod by far - maybe I'll make an update to disable individual features for better compatibility.
