IAU-15 Balrog - Nuclear-powered Multipurpose VTOL

Description
PLEASE READ, or copy to a text file for reference when you get stuck. HIGH PHYSICS DETAIL REQUIRED!

Type:
Heavy Lift Multipurpose Tiltrotor Aircraft

Speed:
~360 km/h (depending on load)

Cargo:
2x ISO containers

Powerplant:
Nuclear, 12x steam turbines developing 6000sW.

Description
A large nuclear-powered VTOL aircraft that can be used for multiple roles depending on the cargo it carries. It can either be used as an ordinary transport aircraft with internal space for two ISO containers, or loaded with container-sized modules for other civilian and military roles. It's a strange looking monstrosity that will scare children as much as it scares environmentalists and NBC troops, although it's operators may find it's range and skycrane loading capabilities useful.

Operation
To get into the aircraft, jump and grab the handle above the door and swing inside. Once inside, the rear cargo ramp can be used for easier access. Powerplant and radios will be on by default, wait a minute or two for reactor and boilers to heat up and generators to start producing power.

The aircraft can be controlled from the pilot seats, crane operator station or the rescue module (if loaded). It can also be radio-controlled from a compatible command station. Press H to view control hotkeys once seated.

  • Turn on the instrument panels via the overhead lights panel.
  • Set throttle to about 20% and release wheel brakes.
  • Use W/S to pull out of the hangar, use Left/Right arrow keys to turn.
  • Set throttle to about 40% and increase collective to take off.
  • When in VTOL mode, use Auto-Hover and Altitude Hold as needed. Use Collective Up/Down hotkeys to adjust altitude when Altitude Hold is on.
  • When in level flight, turn on Auto-Hover to level out the aircraft at current altitude.
  • When in level flight, press hotkey 5 to switch on Auto-Yaw, press again to turn on Mouse Control.

The Main Monitor
The main monitor displays the aircraft's status by default. Use the Switch Monitor Mode button to switch between status display, radar map, tracker camera and module display.

Autopilot Modes
Hold (HLD) - The autopilot will hover at the waypoint position.
Circle (CIR) - The autopilot will circle the waypoint position. Useful for aerial artillery attack.
Fly Over (F/O) - The autopilot will continiously turn around and fly over the waypoint position. Useful for level bombing.
Land (LND) - The autopilot will land at the waypoint position and stop rotors.

Use the Waypoint Radius keypad to set waypoint radius. In HLD and LND modes, it will be the distance the autopilot considers the waypoint reached. In CIR and F/O modes, it will be the circle distance and the distance the autopilot flies away from the waypoint before turning around. Leave keypad inputs on zero to use defaults (home base as waypoint, 1000m circle and flyover distance, 350m altitude).

The autopilot will control landing gear and throttle automatically.

Waypoint Modes
Map (MAP) - The autopilot will follow the specified X/Y map coordinates.
Radar (RDR) - The autopilot will follow the nearest/locked radar contact.
Return To Base (RTB) - The autopilot will return to it's home base or linked command station when under radio control. It will also switch to RTB mode when under radio control and it loses radio signal.

The aircraft's default home base is O'Neill Airbase or the linked vehicle when carrying a command module. It will also return to it's home base when in MAP and RDR modes and no waypoint coordinates is given/no radar contact is found.

Control Modes
Auto-Yaw (A/Y) - The aircraft will apply yaw automatically when banking.
Mouse Control (M/C) - Use mouse to pitch and turn when in level flight, controls yaw in VTOL mode.

Radar Map

When the radar is on, the nearest contact will be displayed as a green box. Turn on the tracker to lock on to the contact. Locked contacts will be displayed as a red box. When the radar is off, the aircraft's home base will be displayed as a green box instead.

Press the Cycle Target Channel button (when the tracker is off) to switch between nearest, second nearest and third nearest contact. Targets will refresh after a full radar sweep.

Use the Cycle Zoom Levels button to change zoom level.

Tracker Camera

The tracker is used for observation, target tracking and aiming weapons. If the tracker is turned on and the radar is off, it will focus on the current waypoint position.

  • Turn the tracker on to focus on the nearest radar contact, it will lock on to the contact once in range (~3000).
  • When the tracker is on, turn on Tracker Manual Control to aim the tracker manually via arrow keys, turn off once a target is locked to track it.

Yaw will be disabled when the tracker is under manual control, control sensitivity depends on zoom level.

Module Display

Displays the camera or details of the selected module, depending on the type of module. If both modules are selected, it will display details for the module in cargo bay 2. Use the module display and turn Tracker Manual Control on to take direct control of turrets on weapon modules.

Operating the Skycrane
Containers can be loaded and unloaded in various ways. For this example, two containers will be loaded via cargo bay 1. When loading modules, make sure you load them the right way around (check for arrows on the module containers).

Cargo bay connectors will be on by default (for spawning the aircraft with modules already loaded).

  • Turn off cargo bay Fwd and Aft Connectors.
  • Open cargo bay 1.
  • Move the crane to the fwd position.
  • Turn off the Crane Top Connectors to release the crane, turn on the Crane Connectors and winch down to attach the container.
  • Once the container is attached, toggle Crane Top Connectors on and winch up until the top connectors reattaches.
  • Move the crane to the aft position and turn on the Aft Connectors, release the Crane Connectors once the container is connected.
  • Repeat to attach a second container and winch it up. When the Crane Top Connectors attaches, close cargo bay 1.
  • When the cargo bay is closed, toggle the Fwd Connectors on and then release the Crane Connectors once the container is connected.

Press the Alternate Crane button to fold up the crane for loading RN-class nuclear reactors.

To unload containers, reverse the process or simply dump them out of the rear cargo ramp. The rear cargo ramp is two-stage. Press the Open/Close Cargo Ramp button once to align with sliding tracks, press again to open/close fully.

are there any plans to update it for the gasses update? the boiler pressure logic node got removed and for some reason, the fluid node is now connected to any node the pressure node was connected to, so the boiler system thinks the boilers are always overpressure

is it possible to turn off the reactor? and does the electrical port at the back let electricity out or in?

The winch seems not to be able to pull up your 2900 container until the top is able to lock in...
It always stops winching up with the top of the container directly in the bay door.

К сожалению, изменений нет, снижаться после автопилота мучительно долго. -25 это боль и страдания. Игра превращается в ожидание посадки.

the collective is too slow, except that this is a wonderful creation👍

@PennywiseNibbles - Thanks, I'm not a native English speaker so my descriptions can be somewhat confusing sometimes!

@Tossonen - Make sure auto-hover is off in aeroplane mode, auto-hover acts like auto-level in aeroplane mode. I can improve the collective by separating the manual control logic from the autopilot logic (collective limit of -25 is for the autopilot to land softly) and heading hold against the wind is possible.

Google translate (excuse any mistakes!):
Убедитесь, что автоматическое наведение выключено в режиме полета, автоматическое наведение действует как автоматическое выравнивание в режиме полета. Я могу улучшить коллектив, отделив логику ручного управления от логики автопилота (ограничение столбца -25 означает, что автопилот мягко приземляется), и возможно удержание курса против ветра.

@LOcOtObO2-0 - That can sometimes happen when the rotor torque is too much for for the physics engine to handle but, its very rare. As long as you keep physics detail on high and throttle down to around 40 before going into VTOL, it should be fine.
