Oh huh that's a very odd bug. Hope you can figure out what's causing it!
The mod has to be loaded on top of the vanilla creature graphics, otherwise it wont work, all it does is re assign the images used and their coordinates for the dwarf sprites.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean when you say you have a mod that replaces "vanilla_creatures", I think mods either add stuff or overwrite stuff, and not completely replace them according to the wiki. [dwarffortresswiki.org]
Also sorry about the crashing, with my mods so far if you create a new world or load into the game and then exit back into the main menu and then try to generate a new world it will crash, I'm not sure whats causing it and working on a fix.
I'm pretty sure there's a conflict with one of my other mods too, because when I generate a world with all my usual mods, the dwarves lack graphics entirely. I'm testing to try to find the culprit.
