On 12 June 2023, the Tanoan islands were invaded by the Russian Armed Forces. The move finally came after months of speculation, increased tension and Russian naval build up along Tanoa’s borders.

On 15 June 2023, the Tanoan Government capitulated to Russian demands and transferred national authority to Russian senior commanders. The Tanoan Government made a public statement, pleading its citizens to refrain from dissent or rebellion and comply with the Russian occupiers. However, tension between Russian infantry and Tanoans deteriorated with endless cycles of Tanoan guerrilla attacks and Russian war crimes.

On 21 June 2023, British war correspondent, Marek FORD arrived in Tanoa to report on the crisis. However, later that day, a squad of Russian infantry were killed by Tanoan militia in the village of La Foa. The incident sparked a mass frenzy in Russian occupiers who proceeded to indiscriminately shoot civilians. With all commerical transport closed, FORD is left stranded on Tanoa.

FORD's fixer has offered him the opportunity to escape by boat from the small village of Koumac.
