Elemental Clans: MES NPC Combat Encounters

Description
This is an MES NPC mod that focuses on tempestuous planetary battles, bunker-buster missions, missile point defense, and phat loot.

Metal Clan | Combat NPC | Modular Encounters Systems

Space engineering is threatened everywhere by Metal Clan: an evil alien race made of dark matter nanobots that are determined to wipe out carbon-based organisms on a planet or moon near you.

Main Game Loop

Cold War -> Hot War -> Defeat Boss -> Cold War -> Repeat...

Players begin in a state of "cold war" and will only experience aggressive encounters once there is a buildup of significant power in the local region. After directly attacking enough of Metal Clan's cargo vehicles and military stations, they will declare war on the player. All future encounters will have varying degrees of aggression and difficulty. Once the player has defeated enough high value targets, a boss encounter is eligible. Destroying a boss will reset the current state with Metal Clan back to the cold war, and a player can choose to escalate back to war or mostly ignore Metal Clan.

Metal Clan encounters consist of single ground vehicles, convoys of ground vehicles, or planetary installations of various sizes. Many encounters will spawn rockets or missiles which have high explosive yields, and can potentially attack a variety of targets at once.

Lore

Space Engineers pierce the atmosphere of a seemingly new planet, coasting to the surface with ample supplies in their robust drop pod. A new frontier for humanity, perhaps, though this is no novel landscape for the eternal machines of war known as Metal Clan! Lurking within the bedrock lie dormant nanobots, disintegrated and resting peacefully since their last conquest many millennia ago. The arrival of new lifeforms and new machinery activates their sensors and awakens the computerized mind. Slowly they begin to reintegrate into forms more suitable for seeking out their deepest desire: new opponents and challenges in the craft of war!

At first, the Engineers only heard a slight rumble, or perhaps felt an unusual vibration. Eventually everyone felt they were being watched by an unseen and predatory force. Slowly more and more reports appeared of uncanny living machinery, incomprehensibly sentient vehicles, and ghastly radio frequencies emitted from unexplained steel assemblies. Finally, the team of Engineers confirmed their belief - an alien entity made from strange metal had discovered their base and had been studying their defenses! Was it too late to begin preparing defenses for this alien aggressor?

Then one day, the sky turned dark with smoke and ash. Rockets screamed through the atmosphere, sending scientific missions to an explosive conclusion. Missiles rained down on mining convoys, scattering their efforts and plunging the engineering colony into debt. These were the least of their fears! Seemingly overnight, these metal aliens built a large spire straight out of the ground which now emits wave after wave of rocket attacks. The tanks poured in from all sides, and artillery blasted the colony from mountaintops. Sardonic, robotic laughter cackled over the radio waves as the computerized intelligence mocked those who fell before the might of Metal Clan.

With seconds remaining before the collapse of all bulkheads and loss of their new colony, the Engineers made one final communication back to their home world. "This planet is a battlefield," they cried. "Do not attempt a landing without proper defenses!" Now armed with the knowledge of this alien menace, defense forces prepare to find the central location of the alien intelligence, and to destroy it once and for all!

It would be great if you and anyone else would join the discord (linked above) and discuss things like spawn rates. For example, Im taking guesses at what an appropriate threat level for spawns for the average player, they might be too high. Id love to lower the threat score checks but I also dont want to make the early game too hard.

that is proably a problem with a few workshop mods. just rare bloody spawning
Black Tortoise  [author] 17 Dec, 2024 @ 5:32am
Im starting to add some new spawns, starting with Cold War phase since there is so little variety.

Testing planetary installations takes a long time, which I dont have a lot of, so releases are kinda slow.

I started playing my local games with as many NPCs as possible, then learned that Elemental Clan spawns become rare due to too few prefabs/spawn options per behavior.

So rather than add new features, Ill spend some time adding new spawns for each behavior type, so that there is more variety and more likelihood for Metal Clan to spawn.

well at lest i can be shure for the time this mods and its siblings are active threats.
Black Tortoise  [author] 14 Dec, 2024 @ 10:58am
This one is active, though at a rather slow pace. Testing spawns is tedious, especially installations. I use the elemental clans in all of my SE savegames so I intend to keep it active :)

may just be i eather found the inactive ones or what have ya. a lot of the good classics that get thrown up by relavence just dont work as far as the editions on steam got. as i should let it be known the one basic ai one that gave a TON of ai ships in all enviroments stoped workin and all that. (something basic ai or what ever) also no idea if any mes modules to re enable vanilla encounters and stuff as a friend and i used it heavly in coop on mars. no vessles and only one beacon. and we did explore around enough to have spawned shit and i have to little know of MES to say for shure if just its enough. but one mod i tried was a weyland-yutani mod. was really hopen to enjoy thoes builds. but in my testing nothing spawned.

Thats interesting lechkingofdead. I have several MES mods (NPCs) running in a SE game I am currently playing. Im active in the Discord and assume most of the mods work fine. There is a link to the MES discord channel in the description above or on the MES workshop page. I suggest hopping on and asking some questions, the community is active and helpful.

lol wel peeps and funkyness aside this was proably the only MES mod i got to work over a few hours of testing MES mods. i sware the majority of em are borked and because of the normal ships being disabled. it annoys me. maybe you may know of MES that work but i like the antics regardless.

Quite frankly I am much more attracted to the Brakowski-Krueger intra-muscular horseradish absorption method. This allows for Prime Directive Medium Well Categorical universal perspective to be maintained, while freeing my mouth up for the poppenings of delectable goafs and various forklift certifications. But thank you for the feedback! :steamhappy:
