Description
SUMMARY
Adds a small, intelligent, and violent alien race. Great at long-range combat and tasks requiring intelligence, not so great with manual labor. Has a unique anatomy, including the head not being necessary to live and protective scales that may prevent fatal blows. The aim here is to help space feel like it’s filled with a wide range of species. All original content.

TRAITS:
Apex Predator
  • Does not care about seeing or eating dead bodies, even if eaten raw.
  • Does not care about wearing clothing that a pawn has died in.
  • High threshold for pain.
  • 120% melee dodge chance
  • 150% hunting stealth and butchery speed.
  • 30% animal gather speed and animal tame/train speed.
  • 130% aiming accuracy
Smart
  • 120% research speed, medical tend quality, surgery success, drug cook speed
  • 150% global learning speed
Alien Biology
  • Wide temperature tolerance (-40C to 45C)
  • 300% eating speed (yay mouth flaps)
  • 80% rest rate (aka sleeps longer than humans)
  • Low carry capacity
  • 70% general labor speed
  • 30% mining and smoothing speed
  • 135% immunity gain speed
  • Protective plates that can save you from damage, but do not grow back once shattered.
  • A single tentacle arm and tail/leg, three mouth flaps, and the brain where a human stomach would be. Most of the body can manipulate objects with finesse, so missing a tentacle is not the end of the world.

FACTION SPECS
A mix of Takala and Human pawns, either as a neutral or pirate group.

BIOLOGY:
The Takala are not quite like any living being humanity has come across before. Not having anything that resembles blood, the Takala don’t quite “bleed” as much as they have bits of themselves fall out once a hole is big enough. Their brain is located where earth animals would have a stomach, with the destruction of their “head” simply being very inconvenient. Portions of their body are also covered in incredibly tough scales, protecting them from attacks much in the way as a ceramic plate stops a bullet when shattered. It's said that a Takala missing all of its scales is a sign of truly fearsome fighter, as losing so much protection while also still surviving is no easy feat.

HISTORY
The Takala are a recent addition to life beyond the stars. As their home planet does not have surface metals or hard rock, the evolution of their planet is very different from that of earth. With no way for a prey species to make tools that could overcome their biological disadvantages like humanity did, the dominant animal of the planet was (and is) simply the biggest and most vicious predator. Towering over every other species in their dense jungle-like home world, the Takala are that apex predator.

In their long time as the dominant species, they have also evolved an equally impressive intelligence. The Takala are notably smarter than humans, having taken only a couple of generation to adapt to human technology and integrate themselves into various rimworld colonies. Their violent evolutionary background often leads them into lives as pirates and slavers (with the Gerzee being a favorite target), though their intellect makes them popular for scientific roles as well.

With the reflexes to dodge melee attacks and the bodily finesse to accurately fire weapons, they are nature’s perfect killing machines. Being culturally violent, the only thing that kept their population in check was their tendency to kill each other. Humanity would probably have never have let these formidable beings spread out amongst their colonies if it weren’t for one important fact: the Takala are comparatively tiny. Standing at about 4 feet tall (1.2 meters), their status as an apex predator on their home world does not mean much when standing next to an average human. And so, the Takala simply do not pose a significant threat to humanity. At least not yet.

MOD COMPATIBILITY:
  • Combat Extended
  • Gerzee Expansion

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE:
  • Hopefully, better in-game art. I’m open to anyone that wants to make that better. I don’t have the skillset to do it.
  • Have my Gerzee race integrate with this mod more. Maybe Gerzee enslaved fighters?

hey, just thought i'd let you know that the lifestages for Takala are configured incorrectly; the Preteen Takala lifestage is replaced with the Preteen lifestage from your Gerzee mod, which i do not have installed. i assume this is a mistake so i just wanted to let you know!

Legends tell of a Takala subspecies formed from combining their genes with Boomalopes.... they are the "Boomshakalaka"....

Thanks!

The size is a bit intended in that they're just tiny, but also making weapons scale to their size is way outside my zone of skill (or willingness to risk messing up people's games with iffy code).

I like these guys. Don't know if it's intended but I find it funny seeing these guys show up as enemies and their weapon is bigger than their own body
