Mosasaurus - Prehistoric Kingdom: Dino 'Ditions Poseable Kit

"Mosasaurus. Not just the star of the prehistoric sea, but a vanguard in the very science of paleontology. In 1794, in a quarry near the Meuse river in the Netherlands, what looked like the skull of a toothed whale was discovered. Soon it was realized that this belonged to a marine relative of snakes and lizards -- a sea serpent!

This skull played a key role in the discovery of extinction. Back in those days, it was assumed that the natural world was a constant, with animals more or less looking the same throughout time. But here we had a giant sea lizard, unlike anything found today. And from those headlines, the seeds of evolutionary theory were sown.

Ha, it's funny: In modern times, we've realized that a marine reptile ought to have things like a tapered body, a robust musculature, and lips. Making the Mosasaurus resemble, guess what? A whale! Hahaha! I guess you could say we've come full circle on this one."
