Supermarine Spitfire mk.XIV

Ok wow. This one was a long time coming. Also, 2 releases in 2 days? after not releasing for months? That was pretty unexpected, right? Anyway, I absolutely adore this build, it was one of my favorites ever to make. I tried to make this replica as faithful as possible, including obj detailing, accurate speed and control, replica gear, and of course shaping and detailing that is accurate as possible.

Here is a real spitfire mk.XIV:

and here is mine:

(I apologize for the image size)

- Obj detailing -
Using my newly found blender skills, I was able to create a number of small obj details, from intakes, to propellors, to tail landing gear (which both moves, and retracts).

- Landing gear -
I happen to be very proud of the landing gear on this aircraft. The design of the main gear is derived from jwandel's pogo gear v2, which is derived from my original pogo gear design, meaning it has been many many months in development.

The gear uses a limiter running the length of the gear, another limiter running behind it (to keep the gear rotationally locked), and linkage at the bottom to connect to the back limiter. This particular one has a few other rods to keep it in the correct rotation once in retracts so that it doesn't stick out of the wing. The gear also has gear doors, which are linked directly to the landing gear, and don't have their own rods. I think sometimes the aircraft viewed from below looks like it has a decal of landing gear on the bottom, I just think its funny.

- Engine -
Just like most engines I've made, this of course runs on Zaluris's free energy mechanism. This time, however, there's a twist. It features a double rod system, making it as far as I know the first free energy engine to have rpm throttle control. This allows for a much simpler and stronger prop, since it doesn't need to be pitch controlled. Because of this added simplicity, it is able to reach insanely high RPMs.

- Fun Details -
This plane has lots of fun little details included. Most notable of these include the opening canopy, wing guns, and tail flag.

- Controls -
As usual, yaw, roll, pitch, and thrust, are as assigned in the "aircraft controls" section of the controls area in DCB settings.
If you don't already have these set up, a good control scheme I like to use is: roll = A/D pitch = W/S, yaw = Q/E and throttle = SHIFT/CTRL. This control scheme allows me to easily control aircraft with one hand, while using the mouse to control the camera with my other hand. Highly recommend.

This aircraft has 4 other controls:
  • Gear = G
  • Engine on/off = U
  • canopy = N
  • elevator trim = F/V
  • handbrakes = handbrake

- final thoughts -
This is another almost entirely solo project. the only credits I can give are of course Zalrusi, as always, for the free energy, and Jwandel for his pogogear v2 landing gear design, which my gear (now dubbed pogogear v3) is based on.

Anyways, that brings me to the end. This project took way too long, and I am so happy to finally be releasing it.

Thanks, and Enjoy,
-Tucker
