Description
Here is Cunard's Grand Trio (or Cunard's 4 funneled-liners)!

The first 2 ships, RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania, were built in response to Germany's Kaiser-class ocean liners (which were at the time the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ships afloat). To keep Britain at the top of the transatlantic shipbuilding, and to keep Cunard ahead of their rivals (mostly the White Star Line, which had built 3 of their "Big-Four" class liners, also the largest ships at the time), these 2 new ships would be record breakers in size, luxury, and most importantly speed. Their construction was also funded by the British government with the idea of these ships being quickly converted into some wartime role. The first ship, Lusitania, was completed in 1907, and she was the largest, fastest, and most luxurious ship in the world, evening capturing the Blue Riband from Germany. 3 months later, Mauretania was completed and stole all of Lusitania's titles (including the Blue Riband). However, the 2 ships would eventually be surpassed in size and luxury by White Star Line's Olympic-Class liners (Olympic, and her sister Titanic). With the White Star Line planning to build a 3rd Olympic-Class ship (Britannic), Cunard placed an order for a 3rd ship to sail along side Lusitania and Mauretania. This ship would be the RMS Aqutiania, completed in 1914, she was larger and more luxurious than the 2 ships but slower. When World War 1 broke out, Mauretania and Aquitania were mothballed, while Lusitania remained in passenger service, where she was famously torpedoed and sunk on May 7th, 1915 by the submarine SM U-20. Lusitania sank in only 18 minutes, and turned public opinion (mostly in the United States) against Germany. Mauretania and Aquitania later would be requisitioned by the Admiralty as troopships and hospital ships during the war. They continued passenger service once the war ended, with Aquitania receiving a refit. In 1928, after nearly 20 years, Mauretania lost the Blue Riband to Germany's SS Bremen, being the 2nd longest holder of the Blue Riband (the 1st being SS United States). By the time the Great Depression rolled around, the 2 ships were starting to show their ages. Mauretania would be used as a cruise ship before being scrapped in 1934 along side her rival Olympic, but her name was later passed on to a new Cunard liner in 1938. Aquitania was soon to be scrapped once RMS Queen Elizabeth (RMS Queen Mary's running mate) was completed. Before her scrapping, World War 2 broke out, and Aquitania was once again used as a troopship. She was used in this role for the entire duration of the war, primarily serving in the Southwest Pacific and Indian Oceans. When the war was over, Aquitania briefly saw passenger service again, but was finally withdrawn from service and scrapped in the 1950s, being the last and only liner of her type to serve in both World Wars, and last 4 funneled liner in service. She also the longest serving ship for Cunard until the RMS Scythia ended her service in 1958, and eventually RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 when she was decommissioned in 2008.
