Historical Context:

Caesar Augustus[a] (23 September 63 BC – 19 August AD 14), also known as Octavian, was officially the first Roman emperor who reigned from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. He is known for being the founder of the Roman Principate, which is the first phase of the Roman Empire, and Augustus is considered one of the greatest leaders in human history.[3] The reign of Augustus initiated an imperial cult as well as an era associated with imperial peace, the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta. The Roman world was largely free from large-scale conflict for more than two centuries despite continuous wars of imperial expansion on the Empire's frontiers and the year-long civil war known as the "Year of the Four Emperors" over the imperial succession.

Originally named Gaius Octavius, he was born into an old and wealthy equestrian branch of the plebeian gens Octavia. His maternal great-uncle Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC and Octavius was named in Caesar's will as his adopted son and heir; as a result, he inherited Caesar's name, estate, and the loyalty of his legions. He, Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus formed the Second Triumvirate to defeat the assassins of Caesar. Following their victory at the Battle of Philippi (42 BC), the Triumvirate divided the Roman Republic among themselves and ruled as de facto dictators. The Triumvirate was eventually torn apart by the competing ambitions of its members; Lepidus was exiled in 36 BC and Antony was defeated by Octavian at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC.

After the demise of the Second Triumvirate, Augustus restored the outward façade of the free Republic, with governmental power vested in the Roman Senate, the executive magistrates and the legislative assemblies, yet maintained autocratic authority by having the Senate grant him lifetime tenure as commander-in-chief, tribune and censor. A similar ambiguity is seen in his chosen names, the implied rejection of monarchical titles whereby he called himself Princeps Civitatis (First Citizen) juxtaposed with his adoption of the ancient title Augustus.

Augustus dramatically enlarged the Empire, annexing Egypt, Dalmatia, Pannonia, Noricum and Raetia, expanding possessions in Africa, and completing the conquest of Hispania, but suffered a major setback in Germania. Beyond the frontiers, he secured the Empire with a buffer region of client states and made peace with the Parthian Empire through diplomacy. He reformed the Roman system of taxation, developed networks of roads with an official courier system, established a standing army, established the Praetorian Guard, official police and fire-fighting services for Rome, and rebuilt much of the city during his reign. Augustus died in AD 14 at the age of 75, probably from natural causes. Persistent rumors, substantiated somewhat by deaths in the imperial family, have claimed his wife Livia poisoned him. He was succeeded as emperor by his adopted son Tiberius, Livia's son and also former husband of Augustus' only biological daughter Julia.

Changelog:

1- Roman units, emperors and generals total reskin. Total AE reskin for non roman factions.

2- Size increased( Startpos and campaign,Melee infantry 400, missile infantry 300, cavalry 120)

3- The starting position of some barbaric kingdoms has been changed to represent a more historically accurate scenario. Startpos representing Europe after the treaty of Brundisium 40 bc.

4- Diplomatic effects have been changed so now small factions will respect bigger ones, getting into deals easily. This wants to reproduce the real situation of the epoch where the small barbarian kingdoms tended to respect the more powerful Rome even if they had periodic wars. All roman factions share culture so as well with the other diplomatic changes you could be able to join another roman faction wihout conquering entirely.

5- Ai improvement, more changeling campaign where the Ai will be more aggressive. Nevertheless, this in hand with point 4 will reproduce in global, harder wars with the Ai but less common. So to win a war against will be harder than in vanilla but you will have wars with fewer factions( if you use diplomatics wisely)

6- 4 turns per year

7- New battle system with more realistic morale system as well as slower combat. The spacing of the German factions has been increased and the one of the Romans decreased, trying to reproduce a more historically accurate situation. I have just transpose one of my battle mods to this one, you can see the entire battle changelog here:

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2204246229&searchtext=realistic

8- Roman basic sword units can be recruited in regular cities and towns, and all of them have attacking testudo ability. Roman spear units limited.

Out of interest, @ridboii - you ever manage to solve that issue you were having playing as Marc Antony? Having the same issue.

Nice mod, though is there a sub-mod that changes the names of the cities to their classical ones?

Eniac 11 Aug, 2024 @ 2:22pm

Hello again,
I realise you are busy, but wondered if you ever managed to look at using the old Ancient Empires unit cards?
If not, fair enough, but would be nice.

These are wonderful but I would love a submod using the old Ancient Empires unit cards.
They were beautiful, but as mod seems dead, you only ever get to use the early ones in campaign and it seems a terrible waste.
They even had great general portraits, but again only for custom battles,
Any chance you could revive them?

i will check it out during the month of july

*As Antony's Rome. I should have clarified that in the previous comment. I am, however, able to play and end turns as the other second triumvirate factions.
