YOU REALLY DONT NEED THE ATTACHED MODS TO PLAY THE CAMPAING, YOU JUST NEED THEM FOR THE SKINS AND THE UI CHANGES.

Historical Context:

Year of the 4 emperors

The Year of the Four Emperors, AD 69, was the first civil war of the Roman Empire, in which four emperors ruled in succession: Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian.[1] It is considered an important interval, marking the transition from the Julio-Claudians, the first imperial dynasty, to the Flavian dynasty. The period witnessed several rebellions and claimants, with shifting allegiances and widespread turmoil in Rome and the provinces.

In 68, Vindex, legate of Gallia Lugdunensis, revolted against Emperor Nero and encouraged Galba, governor of Hispania, to claim the Empire. The latter was acclaimed emperor by his legion in early April. He was notably supported by Otho, legate of Lusitania. Soon after, the legate of a legion in Africa, Clodius Macer, also rebelled against Nero. Vindex was defeated by the Rhine legions, but they also rebelled against Nero. Finally, on 9 June AD 68, Nero committed suicide after having been declared a public enemy by the Senate, which made Galba the new emperor. However, Galba was unable to establish his authority over the Empire, as several of his supporters were disappointed by his lack of gratitude. He especially adopted Piso Licinianus as heir (Galba was childless and old), instead of Otho as widely assumed. Angered by this disgrace, Otho murdered Galba on 15 January with the help of the Praetorian Guard and became emperor instead. Unlike Galba, he rapidly earned considerable popularity, notably by bestowing favours and emulating Nero's successful early years.

Otho still had to face another claimant, Vitellius, who had been acclaimed by the legions of the Rhine on 1 January 69. Vitellius won the First Battle of Bedriacum on 14 April. Otho committed suicide the next day, and Vitellius was appointed emperor by the Senate on 19 April. The new emperor had little support outside of his veterans from the German legions though. When Vespasian, legate of Syria made his bid known, he received the allegiance of the legions of the Danube as well as many former supporters of Galba and Otho. After his acclamation in Alexandria on 1 July, Vespasian sent his friend Mucianus with a part of his army to fight Vitellius, but the Danubian legions commanded by Antonius Primus had not waited for Mucianus and defeated Vitellius' legions at the Second Battle of Bedriacum on 24 October. Vitellius was subsequently killed by a mob on 20 December. Mucianus arrived several days after and swiftly secured Vespasian's position in Rome (Primus had acted independently from him).

The death of Vitellius did not end the civil war, as the Rhine legions still rejected the rule of Vespasian and the new Flavian Dynasty. Some Batavi provincials led by Civilis had fought them since Vitellius' acclamation. In 70, the new regime finally won the legions' surrender after negotiations, mainly because they lacked an alternative to Vespasian. Later, the new regime distorted the events—especially through the writings of the historian Tacitus—in order to remove the embarrassment of having relied on the Batavi to fight Roman legions. The Batavians were therefore said to have revolted against Rome, and the events dubbed the Revolt of the Batavi.[2]

Changelog:

1- Roman units, emperors and generals total reskin. Celtic and german reskin.

2- Size increased( Startpos and campaign,Melee infantry 400, missile infantry 300, cavalry 120)

3- The starting position of some barbaric kingdoms has been changed to represent a more historically accurate scenario. Judean rebels to represent the first judeo-roman war. Celtic accurate factions to represent the conquest of Britain. Batavian revolts.

4- Diplomatic effects have been changed so now small factions will respect bigger ones, getting into deals easily. This wants to reproduce the real situation of the epoch where the small barbarian kingdoms tended to respect the more powerful Rome even if they had periodic wars. All roman factions share culture so as well with the other diplomatic changes you could be able to join another roman faction wihout conquering entirely.

5- Ai improvement, more changeling campaign where the Ai will be more aggressive. Nevertheless, this in hand with point 4 will reproduce in global, harder wars with the Ai but less common. So to win a war against will be harder than in vanilla but you will have wars with fewer factions( if you use diplomatics wisely)

6- 24 turns per year

7- New battle system with more realistic morale system as well as slower combat. The spacing of the German factions has been increased and the one of the Romans decreased, trying to reproduce a more historically accurate situation. I have just transpose one of my battle mods to this one, you can see the entire battle changelog here:

https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2204246229&searchtext=realistic

8- Roman basic sword units can be recruited in regular cities and towns, and all of them have attacking testudo ability. Roman spear units limited.

Hello, a small correction, between the Celtic factions, because they exchanged the Picts for Brigantes, and the Caledonians were left as Caledonians, historically the Caledonians were the Celtic confederation before the Picts, which by lodge would have their same place in the north, and the Brigantes were located further south (right where the Calenodians are in the game)

If you have an issue launching, try this: start vanilla game, start a camping and save. Get out of the game and launch it again with the mod activated but pushing the bottom " continue campaing" in the mod manager. Did you load mare nostrum before the original ae mods?
Scipio 6 Jul, 2023 @ 8:16pm
No other mods but somehow it worked today. Same settings/mods and it failed to launch 4 times the other day so not sure what happened.

The other one I haven't been able to play is the mara nostrum that's using Ancient Empires. It loads regular AE and not the mod/submod. Tried with different orders and no other mods, just the ones listed as required.

Thanks for the great mods!
