ua: 3-тя окрема штурмова бригада була сформована на основі підрозділу ССО, який своєю чергою був сформований на основі добровольчого загону територіальної оборони «Азов», що був створений у Києві 24 лютого 2022 року, в перші години повномасштабного вторгнення. Кістяком підрозділу стали ветерани ОЗСП «Азов» Національної гвардії України та представники Азовського руху.

У лютому-березні 2022 року підрозділ брав активну участь в обороні Києва та Київської області.

9 березня 2022 року підрозділ територіальної оборони «Азов» був переформатований в окремий полк спеціального призначення Збройних сил України «Азов».

Бійці підрозділу територіальної оборони «Азов» разом з іншими підрозділами звільняли від окупантів Васильків, Ворзель, Ірпінь, Бучу, Гостомель, Пущу-Водицю, Лютіж, Горенку, Стоянку та Мощун. 10 березня спільно з 72-ю бригадою ЗСУ в околицях Броварів біля села Скибин влаштували засідку та розгромили колону БТГр 6-го танкового полку 90-ї танкової дивізії армії РФ. Перехоплені переговори російських офіцерів засвідчили, що ЗС РФ втратили майже цілий полк, а його командира, полковника Андрія Захарова, було вбито. Також було знищено 5 танків та захоплена ворожа документація, зокрема, список особового складу 6-й танкового полку. Внаслідок значних втрат БТГр 6-го танкового полку разом із БТГр 239-го танкового полку 90-ї танкової дивізії були змушені припинити просування в бік Києва та поспішно відступити.

eng: The 3rd Separate Assault Brigade was formed on the basis of an SDF unit, which in turn was formed on the basis of the Azov Volunteer Territorial Defence Unit, which was established in Kyiv on 24 February 2022, in the first hours of the full-scale invasion. The backbone of the unit is made up of veterans of the Azov Special Forces of the National Guard of Ukraine and representatives of the Azov Movement.

In February-March 2022, the unit took an active part in the defence of Kyiv and Kyiv region.

On 9 March 2022, the Azov territorial defence unit was reformatted into a separate special forces regiment of the Azov Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The soldiers of the Azov Territorial Defence Unit, together with other units, liberated Vasylkiv, Vorzel, Irpin, Bucha, Gostomel, Pushcha-Vodytsia, Liutizh, Gorenka, Stoyanka and Moshchun from the occupiers. On 10 March, together with the 72nd Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a convoy of the 6th Tank Regiment of the 90th Tank Division of the Russian Army was ambushed and defeated near the village of Skybyn in Brovary. Intercepted conversations of Russian officers showed that the Russian Armed Forces lost almost an entire regiment, and its commander, Colonel Andrey Zakharov, was killed. Five tanks were also destroyed and enemy documentation was captured, including a list of personnel of the 6th Tank Regiment. As a result of the significant losses, the 6th Tank Regiment's BTG, together with the BTG of the 239th Tank Regiment of the 90th Tank Division, were forced to stop advancing towards Kyiv and hastily retreat.
