Description
Simple and very non-fancy duel map as an entry for the community mapping contest.
Also my very first attempt at mapping.

EDIT: Another update. Aside from some brush fixes map now has ambient sounds thanks to Lord Kameron for suggesting it and fug4life for pointing me towards env_soundscape entities. The soundscape has vast room for improvement but it'll do for now.

NOTES: Still no luck with fixing the fog. Also the metal_grate texture (think rooftop duel_district) seems to be missing footstep sounds. Changing it's $surfaceprop value from "metal_box" to "metal" in the material .vmt file has fixed it and here's a little batch script that will do that for you: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4k0b0qtbzsixcog/metal_grate_soundfix.zip
If there's a better way to fix the issue let me know.

Also aside from fixing any glaring issues and updating the screenshots in the next couple of days this is most likely the last update before the contest ends since I'll have alot less time on my hands in the coming weeks. Still, feel free to post suggestions and I'll look into them sometime in the future.

Wow guys, thanks for the kind words and awesome input! This map gets alot more attention than i thought it would! I'll look into everything that you've mentioned for sure.
On another note, the metal_grate texture (incidentally it's also used on the rooftop of duel_district) doesn't seem to emit footstep sounds, apparently due to some missing sound files. The simplest solution I found was to change it's $surfaceprop value from "metal_box" to "metal" in the material .vmt file. I'll also include it in the map description when this batch of tweaks gets done.

You can try texture align by: in texture tool left click to highlight an already aligned texture face and alt+right click to align an un-aligned face.

If you have trouble using ambient generics for sound, try using env_soundscapes. See existing maps and scripts for examples.

lights look better. Also as for fog make sure duel_camera is arena and not too close to wall or clip brushes

Opinion:
This map is freaking awesome! I love the style and theme of it all. Outstanding work for a first attempt!
Peer advice:
-I noticed a few texture breaks along the fence walls, I'd realign them real quick.
-Maybe look into adding an ambient sound sound effect. I just feel like sounds of rattling chains, the whiz of some machinery, and grinding of metal could really sell this map.

Thank you! Kinda figured it was frowned upon to update the original entry during the contest but if it's not I'll go ahead and work on it some more. Thanks for the tip, light entities were owning me for quite awhile so I may have cut a few corners there but it seems point_spotlight was exactly what I was looking for. The lights are already light_spot but the cones are pretty wide for the sake of visibility in the dueling areas.

Good job. Still got some time to polish it up if you feel the need. Some point_spotlights and spotlights where the white lights are would be cool.
