2. Grave Bridge [Mission]

Further along Hell's Highway, the 82nd Airborne Division landed around Groesbeek and Grave, in an effort to secure the enormous Grave and Nijmegen bridges. The majority of the division landed on the Groesbeek heights, overlooking the Reichswald forest on the German border. Other units were landed to both the South and North of Grave Bridge, leading to its swift and successful capture. However, General Gavin chose to limit his advance to Grave; he would focus on digging into defensive positions at Groesbeek rather than make a push on Nijmegen.

Some patrols made significant progress into Nijmegen, but a single German machine gunner forced them back; in reality, there were very few German forces present in the city, and had the 82nd launched a full assault they would have been able to easily capture the road bridge as early as the 17th. This wouldn't have given an opportunity for the Germans to reinforce the city, possibly allowing XXX Corps to cross the bridge on the 19th and reach Arnhem before the 20th, when Frost was still holding the bridge. Market Garden might've succeeded.
