60 Miles behind the frontline, Arnhem was the final objective of Market Garden. Due to a lack of planes, the drop had to be split across three days, the Poles only arriving on the last. On the first day, the first brigades of 1st Airborne Division landed to the West of Oosterbeek. Leaving many units behind to defend the drop zones for the coming days, the advance on Arnhem was split along three routes. Two of these advances were met by Germans, whilst the third Battalion under John Frost successfully avoided the Germans and made it to the bridge. Here they holed up in two dozen buildings on the bridge's northern end: an attempted advance on the Southern end was checked by a German pillbox, and so Frost's men dug in to await relief by XXX Corps.
