Dozens of police psychologists have tried to analyze the mental life of Charles Sheppard. Each of them put forward a different thesis to explain his behavior. But basically the conjectures confirmed only one thing - no scientist, no matter how highly qualified, is able to understand this man.

The man known in the underworld as "Reaper" was born in the US state of North Dakota as Charles Timothy Spokane. In his veins flows Indian blood, the mother is a Santee Sioux. Already at the age of 7, Charles' childhood is over. His parents are murdered during a robbery at the grocery store the Spokanes run near the reservation at Sakakawea Reservoir. Although the perpetrator is brought to justice, he gets off with a suspended sentence.

Many experts see this event as decisive for Charles' further development. The boy wants revenge - at any price. He is adopted in his youth by his aunt Elaine Sheppard and attends high school in Sheridan, Wyoming. Teachers describe him as a "loner" and "withdrawn." The boy is a miserable student, preferring to turn to other things. At 16, he finally goes off the rails. A total of 28 charges are filed against him, ranging from illegal possession of weapons to drug trafficking. Only his minority protects him from going to prison.

On his 18th birthday, he disappears without a trace. Two months later, the press reports a mysterious murder case. Alan Ormit, who has many convictions for theft and robbery, is found cruelly beaten up in his apartment. The man was hung upside down from a lamp hook and completely skinned. Macabre, too: while fully conscious, his eyeballs were gouged out and trampled on the floor. The police learn a little later that this was an old Indian ritual.

Sheppard later goes to San Diego. There he establishes contacts with the Mafia, one of the most influential clans hires him as a contract killer. Soon he enjoys a legendary reputation. Dozens of murders are on his account. And he always kills in the same way: He shoots the victims immobile and skins them with his 12inch Bowie knife while they are fully conscious. Although the police know that the killer can only be Sheppard, they are unable to catch him. With his cool intelligence, he is always three steps ahead of the authorities.

For 15 years, the "Reaper" is up to no good. Then the police succeed in striking a blow against the San Diego mafia. People who could seriously endanger the killer with their statements are arrested. Sheppard gets too hot to handle. He flees to Uruguay to an oil billionaire, for whom he has already done several jobs.

And then A.I.M. comes into play. The entrepreneur from South America owns shares in the agency and forces the bosses to accept the now 35-year-old into the mercenary pool. Under protest, he gets the job.
