They were first discovered patrolling the nearly pitch-black surface of a planet covered in bizarre, towering automated machines, although it's unknown whether or not they originated there. They're found on a great many planets across the galaxy, so it's basically impossible to figure out which one they came from. They used to dislike organic lifeforms and would often state that machines were meant to rule over the galaxy (ah, the stereotypical behavior of any and all robots), although that was many years ago. They have since become much more friendly.

Well this got popular fast.
