The color scheme is designed to help you identify what to aim at to grab the right object quickly. Stormworks does let you interact/grab/place through the flat sides. Items are:

White = Handhold to carry (2)
Orange = Cable connector for power/storage
Gray = Rope anchors (2) with a preloaded rope. Also used to secure in storage.
Red = Fire extinguisher
Blue = Welder
Yellow = Defibrillator
Pink = First aid kit (2)

Given that one rescue to hospital yields $2000 this bundle can be treated as disposable.
