Beemod is generally worth using even without doing anything fancy with it, so it would be worth looking into.
Only drawback is there is the occasional thing that isn't fully function for non-beemod users, but the vast majority of it is fine, including the custom test elements.
Stick to the "improved original clean" or whatever it's called and you probably won't run into any errors at all.
Use the portal 1 style and all non-beemod users are completely screwed XD
Or somewhere else?
I'm using Beemod, so there's probably a couple elements that didn't have models in the base game (and aren't packed in with levels for whatever reason, stupid beemod being amazing but having some annoying things like that)
