On June 22, 1941, Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, the largest land invasion in human history, thus opening up the Eastern Front of World War II. Soon after, Germany was joined by other members of the Axis, and by autumn, they reached Moscow. However, the Soviets pushed them back and, over time, after battles such as Stalingrad and Kursk, they were pushed back until, in April 1945, Soviet forces attacked the German capital of Berlin. The Eastern Front accounted for most of the casualties of World War II, with the Soviets in particular losing 20 million, more than any other individual country.
